Tip from a nooby 2.0

I started welding with a Northern Mig 135. LOVE welding!. I used an auto darkening helmet for 50 buks i got at Northern too. I found that i couldnt see  my welds. OK, so i thought that was normal. I more recently got a Miller Diversion 165. OMG, i LOVE welding more!  I also sprang for a higher level helmet (250 bucks). Now when i MIG with the Northern machine, I can actually SEE my work! My tip for us noobys.... Invest in the good helmet, it is so much nicer to see your welds as you work. Also for us oldies (me 50) use some good readers under that lid, get up close and personal. I am thinking of losing my day job (pediatric heart surgery)  and doing the welding thing full time! OK, jk i dont think the esposa would go in for that! Happy welding! Reply:Eliot, don't quite your day job.  I just survived a cadaveric abdominal aortic anurysm and subsequent transplant and we need good surgeons or I would have been a gonner.  Welcome to the forum and welding as a hobby.  Have fun...BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?

Reply:You are so right about the helmet. I've welded for years on the farm and in maintenance at work, always with a farm store lid. Reply:They make cheater lenses to stick inside your hood also. I grabbed an old timers hood one time to do a small tack and when I struck an arc it looked like the surface of the sun was directly in front of me.
