I suppose this post is pure rhetoric.   I collect and play with a few toys.  I have Japanese motorcycles and British motorcycles.  I rebuilt and took off down the road on a BSA ten years ago.  I pulled in behind a car at a stopsign and nearly killed myself.  The pedals are backwards on British bikes.    Even now sometimes I forget what I'm riding and try to shift with the brake or brake with the shifter.  I still nod my head at the beginning of a weld, using an autodark hood.  Now I'm in the process of trying to remember to not lift my toe to end a bead while stick welding and not lifting the torch while tig welding.  Am I the only one who had this problem at first?
Reply:Nope, I sometimes pause at the end of a weld with my MIG gun...pure habit from TIG. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Oh yeah, you dont need to chip the slag off a MIG weld (solid wire)either.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:How about trying to weld with the machine off then fooling with the ground until you realize its not on!Beezer I had a 69 HD sportster that was backwards also. Hard to get used to at first but after awhile its second nature. That is until you ride something that is backwards of that!
Reply:I nod my head all the time, when I pick up a die grinder and bring it near the work, when I am just making a MIG tack with no helmet,I was watching that special on welding on tv the other day and twice I put my hand up over the arc like I was at work, the wife though I was nuts. And after years of safety glasses being mandatory everywhere inside the building, I am always looking for them now, I will be doing something completely unrelated to work, I was frying perch last weekend and a little oil hit my shirt and I am reachin on top of my head for my glasses
Reply:I get scared when I strike an arc with a plugged in machine, and dont hear it idle up, takes me a min to realize it.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:That's funny.  I do all those things on a regular basis. I always try to look like "I meant to do that" while hoping nobody else saw it.
Reply:A girlfriend I had back in the late 80's fell victim to that in a bad way. Us and a bunch of friends were out at a gravel bed riding 4 wheelers. I had a Polaris Trail Boss 250, and she had a Suzuki QuadRacer 250. She jumped on mine and went for a steep hillclimb on soft gravel. If you know ATVs from the mid 80's, you might see where this is going. She had gotten about 3/4 of the way up and started spinning. First instinct would be to grab the clutch and front brake, right? Unfortunately, on my Polaris the lever on the left handlebar is the rear brake, not the clutch. She broke a couple ribs when the 500+ pound ATV landed on her.
Reply:When I was on monster garage a couple of years ago I was sure they were going to make fun of me nodding my head before each weld I made with the autodark helmet already down!  It was the first I used an AD helmet, and it took the entire week to break the nodding habit!

Getting ready to turn left, I naturally pushed the turn signal lever up.Suddenly, I was in the air and out of control, somehow the trans had slammed into reverse and since it was loaded, it went up on two wheels. Back down too! That machine didn't have turn signals - I had just moved the shifter into reverse! Oops That's about the worst Mr Magoo I remember - or will admit!
Reply:I have done the clear grinding shield welding starts on more than one occasion.  I have also fallen flat on my face when I THOUGHT I had on a AD helmet and I was actually using a regular helmet...thinking I can just stop welding and start walking.Last edited by smithboy; 01-20-2008 at 07:34 PM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I started out in stick. then went to mig. Then went back to stick and forgot how to start the arc on stick. Until my brian kick in and remember how. Why do you put two cents in when its only a penny for your thoughts? Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC Millermatic 150

Reply:ouch, that can really get you in trouble. I have a hard time remembering that my gradge has only a 20amp fuse.
