Here are some pics of a grinder stand I just threw together.  I did need the space on my bench, and I had the extra Mapp, O2, and propane containers.I had some trouble welding the thin steel.  My Hobart 110 mig was set on a voltage of 1 and the wire feed was set on 40.  I eventually realized that adding metal back and forth would eventually give me enough to make a weld without just blowing holes in the canisters.   You can also see my leveling jig, Used after I leveled the wheel.I'd appreciate some hints and tips for next time.Oh yeah, I did drill a small hole in the cannisters before I started cutting or welding on them. Reply:Interesting use of garbage.  Looks like it worked out pretty good.
Reply:did you clean out those cans before welding them?"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Was I supposed to  clean them out?  What's gonna happen?  That's why I'm on here, to find out stuff like that.Hobart 125Words mean things
Reply:man thats like lighting a match to look for a gas leak.find stuff out before you kill yerself.

Reply:Guys, as I posted originally, I drilled a hole in the canisters before I did anything else with them.  They were empty as I could get them, I drilled a hole in them, and they sat for a couple of days min before I cut them open.Hobart 125Words mean things

Reply:My Local Propane guy told me that he has only ever seen one propane tank explode and it was in an Oil Refinery Fire here in the City.....  It blew up and landed about a kilometer away (basically in his Fill yard).  He keeps it in the shop to show people....Puncture them, shoot them... they don't blow up.  Light them on fire and you stand a better chance but that fire better be pretty damn hot in order for that tank to go up.Basically anything built to proper Spec will NOT explode, otherwise barbecues and PIG roasters would be raining down all over,... all summer long!   Cheers,/Jman...
Reply:A guy goes sky diving and jumps out of the plane and on the way down he cant get his shoot to open as he gets closer to the ground he sees a guy comming up from the ground and askes him does he know anything about parachutes? he replies no and askes the parachuter if he knows anything about gas BBGs...ok not the best joke but gotta get a snicker from what it might look like..

Reply:I've cut those single use propane cylinders before.  Leave the torch head on the cylinder when it runs out and "forget" to close the valve for a day or a week or whatever.Drill and no worries after that.  Cut, grind, weld, whatever Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:You were better off welding them without introducing air, completely rich mix won't burn, the right ratio of air / fuel and you could have had a nice bang, maybe loose and eye, maybe your head. As far as the"Propane Guy" who told you they don't blow up , he's dead wrong. Look up a rail car incident in Kingman Arizona, killed the first 12 firemen on the scene. Extreme case but similar cases have killed families driving around with the grill bottle in the car. That is why we now have OPD valve , which by the way have a 30% failure rate. I have worked as a fire investigator and have a pretty good back ground with this.Letting a gas vessel sit will not make it safe either. Look into vapor densities of different products, those lighter than air will dissipate, those heavier than air can hang out for quite some time. Gasoline can get into porous parts of steel tanks and give you problems even after pretty thorough cleaning. Carefull what you put heat and flame to."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:A better way to line up all of the bottles together would be to lay them in a piece of angle iron and tack them together. No need for me to rag on you since everyone else already covered that end of the project.Kind of a neat idea on using the old bottles.G3miller... 225g, s32p, 250x, 304, 12vs, MSW41     victor o/a thermal dynamics cutmaster 50 lenco panel spotter        hobart hf-boxG3 Farms.....raising cattle, hay, kids and hell, ...oh yeah I'm a fire sprinkler contractor by trade.
Reply:I tried to use angle iron to make the cylinders line up, but there are small... differences, thicker parts, where the labels go on, so that didn't work so well.  I figured that even if it were perfect, and the old wheel I used was perfect (they're not!), the floor of my garage isn't even perfectly smooth.  So pretty much I just don't want it to fall, and I want the space it was taking up on my bench!Hobart 125Words mean things
Reply:I'm looking at the wheel...  Check out the offset and the solid center; don't tell me you welded up DaBigPapa's 409 wheel!
