Some areas of castings will crack if you just start welding it without paying attention to expansion and contraction.1: Park bench end casting2: This is area of concern, area that has small openings. Expansion and contraction from welding without pre/post heat would probably give you that dreaded TINK sound soon after welding!3: Areas I heated with #5 OA welding tip (paint burnt off and rusty looking)4: Welded the rest w/o added heating5: FillerPeter Attached Images

Reply:Originally Posted by castweldHere is the story There is a old homeless German man that comes by my shop every so often with small welding jobs. He straps whatever he needs welded on his bicycle. I have seen him riding his bike in the next town over picking up cans and junk. He is in good physical health for his age- probably 70+. Now, your answer. To braze I would have to bevel and torch weld which would take longer. I TIGged because with high amperage the weld penetrated deeply which in most areas made it through welded without having to bevel. The last part of the story- He came to get this and asked "how much". I told him $3. He handed me a $5 and told me to keep the change.Time is reason for doing this way. My minimum is usually $30.Peter
