I was messing around with aluminum after I did the fender.   Plate was ground clean with an aluminum wheel.  Nothing else.  I welded a bead with a gas lenz and a #4 cup.  The other bead was done with a #7 or 8 nothing different.  Plate is 1/4" , 185 amps,  75 Hz, 40% cleaning, no pulse.  Gas was 15 to 20 cfh. 3/32 red.  1/8" 5356.Practice.....Last edited by David R; 01-21-2008 at 06:51 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Huh... That's interesting! Now I have to go try it myself. I almost always use a #4. I've used bigger cups on SS a few times with good results, but I really didn't think it made that much difference. It'll have to wait though, too %$#$ cold out right now. What about the other beads in the second picture, bigger cup?Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:I'm looking at it and thinking "man I really wanna be able to do that well someday."        What kinda technique do ya use?  Sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't know.   Do ya count like playing an instrument and reading music?  A rhythm?Them are good looking welds.   Thanks Dave.
Reply:Dave I was going to ask what cup sizes to use, and them here you have it, does not quite answer the question thow.So when should you use what size cup?I thing I have a #6 in now with 3/32.PSAlso if you are still interested in the 1/8" 1.5% Lan. PM me your address.Me!

Reply:I don't like a 4 or 5 unless I'm doing some fusing or the root opening doesn't allow any more than that due to depth. It's really easy to lose your shielding gas with those small ones. They don't have much coverage, I'd bet the problem was just too large a bead for the coverage.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:The general rule I was taught is twice the tungsten in 32nds.  IE  3/32  = 2 x 3 for a # 6 cup.  1/8 = 4/32 for a # 8 cup.  This is only a guide.  Like Oldad said you may need a smaller cup for a tight spot.  A larger cup will use more gas.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill

Reply:Cup size is measured by 1/16" intervals on the inside diameter. IE #8 cup = 8/16 = 1/2 inside diameter. #4 cup = 4/16 = 1/4 inside diameter and so on and so forth. --Gol'
Reply:Originally Posted by redfishFYI - a larger cup will NOT use more gas but it will reduce the velocity of the gas as it exits the cup (gas will 'blow' less, like 5mph wind opposed to 10mph).Amount of gas used is set by the flow rate of the regulator, so if you are set to 20 cfm (cubic feet per minute) you will use that amount of gas whether you have a #4 cup or #8.
Reply:The orifice int the small cup is smaller than the bead.  Probably why it didn't work as well.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
