My local HS - where I weld (mostly SMAW) when I'm in school - just put in a brand new "financial room"...$100,000.00 worth of computers and tvs etc. However, they told me that they cannot afford any type of ventalation hood..even a porta. fume extractor...pretty funny how these things work out Just ran up to AirGas and bought one of the 3M half mask respirators with P100? filters, seemed as though they were highly recommended on the forums. Any suggestions as to homebrew-type extractors...my instructor is as mad as I am....we also went about 3 weeks without any heat in the shop in 30 degree temps. due to an 'office mistake'. I guess welders just don't rank that high on the totem poll...funny how the school wouldn't even be standing without them Thanks for hearing my rant, jakeDo you really know all of the work that goes into getting that fish onto your plate?
Reply:A strong shop vac with a long hose would at least get the smoke out of the immediate area for cheap.   I wanted to try this idea at work, since our 'fume extraction system' hasn't worked for over a decade and the company has no intentions of fixing it.  But, management wouldn't go for it, since it's not actually equipment designed for welding uses.  They would never think of buying the real thing, too much money.  At least we got new welding machines, a few years ago.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I am lucky, and I know it...My schools basic motto is, "we are not the biggest, and we are not the best, but we will have the newest equipment and technology."Which is not exactly true, but they do not hesitate to spend money on anything we need, when we need it or my instructor asks for it.
Reply:I hate to say it, and I hate to see it buddy, but we're all just going to have to get used to it.  See, technology is what's hot right now, and people have been welding for....well I don't know how long, but a long time, it ain't exactly cutting edge stuff in the eyes of those who hold the purse strings.  That said, do a little bit of research on the health consequences of inhaling those welding fumes and look for a test showing what trace metals you can find in those fumes.  Type up a good research paper showing how a fume hood is a requirement for a safe work invironment and MAYBE, just MAYBE, they will consider buying at least some rudimentary ventilation system.Contact me for any metal polishing needs you may have, my avatar is a pic of a standard, painted fire axe that I ground, sanded polished and buffed to a mirror finish.
Reply:Just get one of thos ebig floor fans that are made by Patton. I bet Wal Mart or similar sells them. Point it toward the door, and turn it on high. It will vent the room pretty well. I use them for work all the time, from welding in the garage when it is too hot/ cold outside, to my regular construction work, to clear dust from the rooms. The fans last forever, and cost maybe $30. Buy it and use it for your own well being. When you leave, take it with you.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Yep, fans.   Since we're not allowed a vacuum system, we all use house fans from home to blow the smoke out our faces.   It gets cold in the winter though welding with a fan blowing on ya.  Vacuum system would be so nice.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I have used a large squirrel cage type fan. The kind used on a forced hot air furnace. It moves a lot of air and can be adapted for exhaust easily. I have three of the and didn't pay for one.
Reply:We dont even have any half decent welders at our school. Most of our machines are 40 years old.We do have a few new lathes but thats about it, two welding machines. Atleast we have something , i know a guy here on the forum who has nothing at his school, They took it all away.
Reply:Weld every door to the tech room closed and ask them for a grant then.
Reply:you could put up a big stink ( no pun intended ) about the lack of concern your school has for your health. I'm sure you can find all kinds of info on health hazards that come from welding smoke. "Every choice you make will effect at least one other person"
Reply:E 6011 @ ~ 90 AMPS should penetrate right through the paint on those fire doors...right?I might have to weld on some ground tabsOn another note - I scored about 60 LBS of 3/16 plate today all oxy cut into pieces about 14 x 5 x 3/16 MS...schweet about 12 individul pieces and a 60 LB piece of 1/2 plate....I'm turning into a pack rat!Do you really know all of the work that goes into getting that fish onto your plate?

This comes straight from the worlds leading authority on welding - Lincoln. Keep in mind raising a stink could backfire on you, as in getting your program shut down. Unfortunately txfireguy is right. I have an associates in computer science and can make them do anything I want them to do as well as fix them when they break, design and build them, program them, have taught them at the college level, and even dreamed up or made work a few things you use every time you access the internet (I was a geek for the army). It was a whole lot harder to get to the level I am at in welding than it was to learn the computer stuff. It also takes a lot longer to reach professional level skills in welding than it does to get a BS in computer science. The cool part is I make a lot more welding than anyone I know who is involved in computers does. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
