How often do you test where you are not allowed to use a grinder? If so, are you allowed to grind your tacks, and then not use the grinder for the remaining of the test? Is there a particular code for this, ASME, API? Thanks in advance!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:alot of it is up to the qc/welding inspector also has alot to do with what the clinent request.I have taken some where i have be able to feather tacks then grind the root also been able to use the grinder all the way out  have taken some where all you could do is feather your tacks with southern company being probably the pickest bunch to test for with duke power being the next in line.don't  be mad cause i can be mad cause you can't!
Reply:We are allowed to feather-grind tacks, but no other grinding on the root is allowed until after being inspected. Grinding during the fill passes isn't restricted. We can grind our starts on the cap, but that's all. Any visible cap grinding isn't allowed. Our tests have a time limit, so if you do a lot of grinding, the clock will kill you.
Reply:D1.5 Bridge code. No power tools at all. Gave test to local 40 men 1in 10 passed coreshield 8.
Reply:I can't really remember being told no grinding, but I did hear a inspector once tell guy that he wasn't giving a grinding test.

Reply:I've only tested for my work, and they let you use a grinder...it's just like if you were to weld the joint out in the field. This is for asme IX. Im certain that I could pass without a grinder, but I like to lightly grind high spots on each pass to make it look purdy for the subsequent passes. From what ive gathered from other contractor welders the test is pretty much identical all around this area...the only real difference is some do bend and some do X-ray. We do X-ray, which is really better for the welder IMO.
Reply:it all comes down to what the client wants in their particular flavor of testing.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I perform all welding tests for my company which is in the natural gas market. API 1104 and ASME IX.....We require grinding of the root pass......(I doubt any could pass the ASME IX without grinding the root)...the API 1104 has alot more allowances for undercut and slag. This is pipe welding only, 6G. This is a topic that I cant understand why one would not want the weld to be as clean as possible....however, each to their own. The code allows the use of grinding or chipping....I do not allow any grinding on the cap.....only the top knot on re-start and it better not be higher than 1/8" or its bye-bye.....A young green pipe welder asked an old salt one day...How can I make the weld on the bottom of the pipe look like the top.......The old salt replied....Screw up the top......
