so i want a flat bed/ car trailer, was about 2 days from going out to finace a brand new pretty one when i scored on a 27 foot triple axle boat trailer. So since i like to use my welder and just got my frist little shop to work in ill convert it over. I want to build about a 18 foot trailer. the boat trailer has the hitch brake setup on it going to 2 of the axels, should i keep this or ditch this brake setup. im only gonna run 2 axels, with the 60/40 setup. Reply:Don't know how everybody else does it, but I generally measure from the ball to the end of the bumper.  then I make the tongue a couple inches longer than that.My name's not Jim....
Reply:About the brakes, what kind of shape are they in? What do you see when you take the cap off of the master cylinder on the tongue? Is there any fluid, is it dry, is it rusty? What about the brake assemblies at the wheels, are they in good shape, or rusted beyond all recognition? With surge brakes, you don't need a brake controller in the truck, plus you have the option of using disc brakes. Used boat trailers almost always need total replacement of master and wheel cylinders, if not entire wheel brake backing plates, because the rust eats everything alive.City of L.A.
