Could anyone give me an idea on what amperage and rod selection I can use to weld this 10mm peice of mild steel to this 1mm stainless?? Ive only got a cheap stick welder at home to work with at the moment.Thanx{ im having trouble uploading the pic. Ill keep trying}Last edited by juice; 01-05-2008 at 03:47 PM.

Reply:1 mm = .040" thick so aproxamatly 40 amps to weld it.  Does that give you a starting point?  AC or DC ?DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:It is a dc machine only. what size rods would you say. Ive only welded thick material with a stick, so this is quite new to me. Ive got some 2.5mm 6013 rods, but im thinking they may be a bid too big for that kind of amperage??Would the 6013 rods do the job, being genral purpose, or would I be better off with something else. It only needs a couple of stickes on each end. Thanks for the reply David

Reply:1/16 6013 should do the trick.Favor the heavy metal.  It might be easier to turn it so the groove is a V.DavidLast edited by David R; 01-06-2008 at 08:13 AM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Clean off that scale first.I'd tig it with 3/32" 306 wire...  but if it wasn't a critical thing, I'd go ahead and use 316 if that's all I had around.
Reply:I would tig it too, but...He only has a stick welder. And yes you really get a better job if you clean off the mill scale.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I wasn't sure since he said he had DC only.  That could be tig.but...even if it's a stick welder, he can get the right stuff and tig with it.
Reply:The correct welding filler wire would be 309 for stainless to steel.TIG or STICK..045 diameter ER309 for TIG - 3/32 diameter tungsten SMAW (stick welding) 309 DC 1/16 diameter.10mm =0.393 thousandths or about 3/8 steel to stainless less than 1/10 (1mm), the thickness of the steel plate.Better TIG weld this unless you are VERY proficient with 1/6 diameter stick 309.Definately a job for TIG.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 01-06-2008 at 03:57 PM.
Reply:You need to sand or grind that mill scale off of that steel first. You just cannot weld things successfully unless they are clean.Don't forget to tack the ends first. Not being condescending, just covering all the bases.
Reply:Because of the difference in thickness of the metals, you may want to consider using a thin-wall tube in place of the solid stock, if your design can accomodate that change.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I will clean the millscale off. I just clamped it there as it was , just to give you guys a better idea of what i wanted to do.I'll go and buy some 6013 rods on Saturday and give it a go, hopefully all goes well. I'll post the pics of the end result. Thanx for all your replies
Reply:gday juice mate, , go buy a small pack of cigweld , weld all 2.mm  or some stainless ones , turn the amps down and there ya go , done neat
Reply:Hey Sam mate. What is the electrode number of the stainless rods? Or is there just different grades of rods? Im a bit if a newby when it comes to welding stainless, as it probably shows. And the same with stick welding, all I use at work is mig. ( and they aren't to keen on personal jobs, which sux!!!! but the money and hours are great)As you have read, I only have a cheap stick welder on hand at home.It does most of my jobs, but stainless??????I'll try anything !!!!
Reply:do NOT even think of trying to use 6013 , for steel to  stainless . Use 309-15  IF your machine is D C . if, it's A C use 309-16 .  Actually 309-16 can be used ac or dc , but it's not near as good on D C as 309-15 is.[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:gday mate its 316L , if ya want i can send ya a hand full down if ya havent already got some??
Reply:7018 is code approved for joining mild steel and stainless, but it requires about 90 amps to run 3/32. Though I have never used them they do make them in 1/16 and they can be purchased in small packs. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
