This is an attachment locking foot pedal from a skid loader. It is magnetic and appears to be cast steel, can anyone tell me the best filler rod to tig weld this with please?Bigger pic - http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/9194/1028010738a.jpgBigger pic - http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/5606/1028010739.jpgBigger pic - http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/331/1028010741.jpg
Reply:ER70S-   the number after the dash won't matter much for this.
Reply:Thanks for the reply. The welding supply did not have that, they recommended this, what do you think? Originally Posted by welds4dER70S-   the number after the dash won't matter much for this.
Reply:The rod pictured is a nickel based rod for cast iron. It will most likely work for a steel repair, but it's a rather expensive alternative.
Reply:WTH kind of LWS doesnt have regular mild steel filler rod, yet has that? Whats this world coming to? [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:I've been in a few LWS  like that.  It was in each case a store I didn't normally do business with.  On a couple of occasions  I was wearing a suit and they assumed I wasn't very knowledgeable.  They offered me stainless tig filler when all I wanted was normal rod for O/A once and in another instance insisted I needed dual shield mig wire to weld cast steel.Needless to say I don't go back to places like those. Maybe in this case they were really just out of the  right stuff.  I still wouldn't go back there.
Reply:Well the worst part is this ... I had my brother pick up the rod and send me that pic, because I was at work and wasn't close to any welding supply stores. When I got the package in hand, it was for a stick welder, I didn't realize it from the picture but it is obvious to me now. I guess the welding supply store didn't hear me when I said tig welder 3 times and filler rod another 3 times?Anyway, I was able to track down the ER70S and I will be trying that tonight. Thanks to everyone who replied! Originally Posted by LanseWTH kind of LWS doesnt have regular mild steel filler rod, yet has that? Whats this world coming to?

Reply:Why weld it with TIG? Stick or wire would work just as well and be way faster.

Reply:Don't feel bad..I TIG everything also..So how did you make out?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:The longer weld times for tig is offset a little by time saved not chipping and brushing flux.  Although properly done 7018 should be fairly easy to chip/brush.  6010 always requires chipping/brushing for me.I tig a lot of stuff that doesn't need it because.....1) The tig is permanently layed out on the table and ready to go.  Gas on, power on, weld!2) When is more tig practice a bad thing?3) Less post weld finishing4) Most of it's hobby work and I don't get paid.  If it takes an extra hour welding, that just means more time playing in the shop!Last edited by AndyA; 10-29-2011 at 12:03 PM.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:It was a little strange because I had to keep putting flux on it. I don't know if that was required, but they recommended that and it wasn't much extra to buy.The welds turned out decent and they appear to be plenty strong, only time will tell if they last and are strong enough for the rough duty the skid loader receives sometimes. Thanks to everyone for their comments and help! Reply:You put flux on ER-70 tigging with it?? Thats pretty strange. Me thinks they assumed you didnt know what you were doing and sold you everything but the kitchen sink. Im glad it turned out well, just please find another LWS, those guys sound like they're either crooks or just downright incompetent.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:If the LWS thought it was cast iron, the nickel rod is appropriate.  Well... assuming they didn't hear the 'tig' part.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Since I wasn't picking it up and the flux was only a few dollars more, it just wasn't worth my hassle to investigate the necessity of the flux with the looming time crunch. I figured it wasn't necessary, but it couldn't hurt to have it hanging around. Originally Posted by LanseYou put flux on ER-70 tigging with it?? Thats pretty strange. Reply:Yes, he missed the "TIG" and "filler rod" statements that I said at least 3 times each  Originally Posted by AndyAIf the LWS thought it was cast iron, the nickel rod is appropriate.  Well... assuming they didn't hear the 'tig' part.
Reply:In my mind, "filler rod" could equally apply to flux coated rods for stick welding.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Yes it was cast or forged ( see the cast in XXXX"s) and the welding supply store sold you the correct filler.Make sure to clean it up first.Bead blast if you can, and treat it for corrosion with phosphric acid.Rinse with water before you weld. Warm it up a little before welding.AS SOON as the weld is complete, stick it in a pile of dry sandand leave it for at least 4 hours and then paint it immediately.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 11-02-2011 at 04:50 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Usually the welds on regular steel are stronger than the steel itself. Do you guys think this would apply for cast iron welds using Nickel 55 rods?20yrs Welding ExperienceArc, Tig, Mig, Brazing, and sometimes I just beat metal together the old fashion way.www.steelworks-online.com
