Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this welder. It is yellow and green and has a high/ low range port. All i know is it is AC only. Are there any tricks to getting an older unit like this to lay good welds? Generally, it seems to work pretty well on thicker stuff with 7014. Today i repaired my wife's pull-behind wagon (which im actually quite proud of), with 3/32 6011. It would run a nice weld once you got the arc started, but getting it to start was kind of a chore, mostly it would want to just stick.it was farily thin metal, but i had to run it up at 70-75 amps to make it work. Never blew through, and seemed to penetrate, but it was just hard to start the arc.just wondering if that is a trait of a lesser quality AC welder.thanks for any help.I might post some pics of the welds i did today to get some feedback, if there is any interest.
Reply:That was my first welder and I still have it. Once I got a lot of practice I got it to work pretty well. I used mostly 1/8" 6011s on 1/8" to 1/4" mild steel and got some pretty respectable looking welds eventually. You could also try some AC 7018, starts real nice and lays down nice when it's fresh. I don't really think it is a lesser quality welder than a Lincoln Tombstone. The high tap is for cutting only according to the information printed on the front panel.Since I got my Thunderbolt AC/DC I haven't used it anymore, tried to sell it for $100 but no takers. My helper was asking about it I'll probably just give it to him. Reply:I guess i never looked at the front to see that the high tap is for cutting only.it does say something about using only 6013 for vertical and overhead. I found that a little odd.I'll stop using the high tap for welding thanks for the info!
Reply:I looked at the note on the front last night. it says:high tap = for cutting, burning holes, vertical up and overhead with E6013 onlylow tap = use with all electrodes.so ... im a newbe ... how do i cut steel with this arc welder? I know about the carbon-air type process, but that can't be what this machine is set up for.I would LOVE to fab some stuff up, but i dont have a good way to cut stuff. |
