first job for my new saw

well this is the job that bought me my new saw so I figured I would post it as I go sorry about the fuzzy pics my old camera does not like the cold in the shop.. These are gonna be chalk bowl stands for first place trophies and the next Ontario Armwrestling Association tourny in Port Elgin ontario. These are for first place. will post more as I go and when there done.. my new saw works great too after almost 100 cuts of large 1/4" stock still cutting like its a new blade I did the proper break in of the blade like the suplier said (Sterret) I bought from local auto parts store was $32 for the new blade.. basically its gonna be OAA vertical with a bowl on top.. Reply:it just one event there first one actually.. my buddy is the Vice pres and he had me make these and he is holding the event in port next sat.
Reply:How big are the letters? They look decent sized all by themselves, but look small in the saw. I would have never thought about doing the "A"'s as one unit and then sliceing them off. Nice job they all look straight and even..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:ya the saw cuts 100% straight i can barely believe how well it cuts am so glad i did not buy a chop saw lol.. the letters  O=7 1/2" and the A is 7 3/4" and  just the way they worked out but you can't see the diff in size when in place. The guy I am doing it for came by today and he was so happy how they look his jaw as on the floor lol..they are 7 1/2 wide.
Reply:Where did you get the saw, and what do you think of it? I'm going to be purchasing a horizontal band saw this coming week. By the way, are you running any cutting fluid? doesn't look like it from the pics...
Reply:yup it has cutting fluid I found this on kijiji (same as craigs list) for $600 and jewed him down to $400 for it is $1499 new and I love it made about 100 cuts of that large 1/4" material in about 3 hours. has hydraulic feed and quick clamp. locks in verticall also to use that way. can fit 7 1/2 x 13 1/2 material in it straight.

Reply:this is also the first real job for my black hawk mig i found there last year welded 3- 3foot beads with no troubles when i made my 3' A
Reply:well i was up early and welded these up am happy with the turn out.. I just put a couple nails in some wood for a JIG to make it go quicker.. will get more pics once he has them painted. Attached Images
Reply:A side note: It doesn't matter when you're stacking the letters on top of each other, but normally the vertical height of an "O" would be slightly taller than an "A."  People unfamiliar with type design tend to think all capital letters are the same height -- which is almost never the case.  Upper-case characters with a rounded surface at the top or the bottom (like the C, G, J, O, Q and S) will have the curve actually cross over the line formed by the bottoms and/or tops of the other (non-rounded) characters.  The effective 'look' of a line of characters cut this way will be that they're all the same height. Good work on the band saw cutting.  I wouldn't have thought of forming the letters as one long piece (like an extrusion) and then slicing them like sandwich meat.  But if your saw is cutting straight, it's a smart way to bang out so many identical characters.Last edited by Jack Olsen; 11-01-2009 at 01:13 PM.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:ya mine turned out with the A a little taller then the O but I just used availible material. and I see why too if these sit on the ground and you look down the optical illusion makes it look fat on top but looks perfect straight on. and I just dropped them off for him to paint and he said the next event he wants me to make 1st 2nd and 3rd place thats tripple the order after the first (learing batch) the other 2 places will be much smaller and simpler.. he said he plans 3-4 events a year he will let me do as many as I can handle.. he said the trophy shop charged him $600 for 2nd and 3rd place little plastic trophies then when he seen mine he was really happy.
