tig electrode difference ?s

I have been buying from the snake oil salesmen for about 2yrs. He has great prices and is a good sales guy. Hes not a welder though. I have some questions about different tungstons or electrodes for tig. I have the red stuff. I think it is 2%. My dad asked me not to use this because it has radiation in it. Hes welded in a nuclear power plant a few times and they have intensive training. The lights would come on when he would come home. Just kidding. He said its dangerous it changes your dna. Anyway I would like this explaned some more. I use the green 100% tungston for aluminum. The snake oil guys welding pro was showing me the 350p for a demo and I asked a few questions. Hes said to use the gold stuff it stars with a Z and it works great on aluminum and steel. It doesnt ball for aluminum and will carry more amperage. Miore seriously, before we get excited about whatever additiional radiation we get from Thoriated electrodes we should consider that the earth is constantly being bombarded from outer space. Things such as Gamma, X-Ray and other niceties are hitting us all of the time. If you folks are worried, send your Thoriated electrodes to me. Reply:Z = zirconiated, go to the lincoln website and look it up, they have the info on what tungsten to use for what, benefits vs drawbacks, health dangers, etc. I think I used to use it on stainless, but it has been so long I am not sure so don't try and take that to the back. I did use it for something, just not too sure what it was now.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:and YES a pointed end will give better control,(less wander)  as far as the gold tung. never used it
Reply:when i am building SS headers and or intercooler plumbing, the gold or lanthinated seems to stay sharper longer.  i can tell you that i have not used green or pure tungsten in almost 6 years.  once you step into invertor based welders, you typically use red or 2% thoriated for everything.  it works excellently on aluminum as it doesnt ball quite like a green tungsten does with a transformer based machine.
Reply:Thanks for all the input. Im not up to a inverter based machine but am learning some of the features on my syncrowave still. I am going to take some classes at the local welding shop. I have a lot to learn. Reading the comments about cheep welders I hope you pros dont mind us joes asking questions.
