Just wondering if someone can give me ballpark estimates for two of these high pressure barriers. I will be building them for an oilfield company that specializes in Frac and Valve equipment. I usually charge a rate of $60hr w/2hr min and have never given estimates. They already have material so this is just an estimate regarding time and labor. I was thinking I can finish in a 10-12hr day but want to leave room for any snags that may come along. I was thinking around $720 but don't want to over/under estimate.South Texas oilfield is booming so keep that in mind, thanks in advance.
Reply:Are these the finished samples? Do they have to be painted? Is pick up and delivery included or are they built at their shop/site? If no to the first two of these your bid is way high."Liberalism is a mental disorder" Dr. Savage
Reply:U think?? I am just building at there shop, not sure if they are painting but that does not really make a difference. This is an oilfield company and I am a welder, not a painter. I charge $60 hr for my services and a 12 hr day would come out to $720. I understand most places up North or out of this industry it would be too high. This is the oilfield and I don't think its too high, I may just give them an estimate of $600 but am waiting for more feedback...
Reply:Thought that you were wanting an estimate for building them. As in each one. If it's just fabbing up non stop then get what you can but they aren't going to pay pipe wages for something like this."Liberalism is a mental disorder" Dr. Savage

Reply:I think I could knock out 2 in a day.   Is the channel welded to the plate?  Do you have a hoist or something to work with?  Forklift?   Bandsaw?  Plasma or torch?I would cope the corners instead of miter,And YES I will paint for my hourly rate,   With some customers if I don't prime and paint, it never gets done.  I like my **** to look good.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:If it takes you 12 hours to build two of these you need to drag. Tops would be four hours apiece and that would be milking it."Liberalism is a mental disorder" Dr. Savage

Reply:@$60hr looks like you caught the gravy train brother. I've been trying to get in on some of that oilfield work but all I see is work for roughnecks, drivers and mechanics. Any help would be appreciated.

Reply:Wow, after speaking with the shop foreman and getting a quote on the price that was charged for the first two... I was told to charge his company $1300 for those two blast pads!!! I know what I am talking about when it comes to work down here in the South, I would have charged way too low.Now onto another project and I need some help with guesstimates, keep in mind this is an Oilfield company and the prices they are expecting/accepting. My avatar says it all folks...  All that I will be doing is building a structure to hold a roof for the blast pad. Will be welding sleeves to the piping in all four corners then welding pipe to the sleeves. The structure will come just above that light then slant down above the parallel side to four feet above the wall, comes out to around a total of 4-5ft on the slant. There will be three sections on top made with 4" channel iron, one on each side and on in the middle. The middle rafters will be supported either by welding to the existing wall by cutting a whole in the sheet metal to weld that side to or fabricating a plate to anchor to wall or the ground with a pipe support welded to that. On the other side a pipe support saddled on the existing yellow pipe. There will be Z rafters or whatever there called between each channel rafter at the ends in order to bolt the roof onto the structure. Will have a scissor lift and forklift at my convenience.I have no idea what to charge for this structure considering the prices I am already quoting for blast pads, lol, what do u guys think??? Thanks in advance!!!Tillman Welding 361 585 3975
Reply:Personally, I wouldn't be blabbing so much about the "gravy train" you're riding.Looking at that "blast wall", I'd say they could use some bricklayers in Texas as well as welders.  I've seen 8yr olds do better with legos.I understand "get er done" but shoddy workmanship still sucks.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:"Blab away," I will!!! Look bro keep your shoddy comments to yourself. If you could pay attention to anything you would know I did not build those blast pads. Those were the proto types I am building mine tomorrow. The company liked the proto type so I am contracting for them to build two more.I did not ask for an opinion so back on topic please.Every time I see someone posting all of their equipment in their sig, **** makes me laugh.Tillman Welding 361 585 3975

Reply:I would have bid those blast walls at 4 hrs, so $300,, your materials, your shop with fork truck, my welder and torch. I would have done this so long as there were 3 or more to build and unlimited shop time (12+hrs a day). I would paint them for an extra $40 each, my compressor or theirs, my gun their paint.  As far as the shade structure, it is hard to say, you don't provide enough info. Need to provide specs on materials, who is providing concrete, What type of roofing, what span,  equipment available for erection, who is excavating holes.  You are obviously trying to do things you have never done before. This is fine, so long as your licensing and insurance cover you, that you are not putting anyone at risk due to inexperience, that you are following the UBC (or whatever building code is being used in your area), and that you are willing to do some of your own homework for the bid.  Some of that homework is knowing the names of structural elements such as purlins, bar joist, girts, etc These are parts of those types of structures and you need to know what to call them and how they go together to support the structure. Posting a plan is the best way to get advise on a build. Good luck, post more particulars, and lose the tude.
Reply:Why do you keep asking for estimates/guesstimates?You already seem to know what the going rate is in YOUR area, if you were in another part of the country that you were not familiar with rate wise, I could understand inquiring about local rates but yer not.If you can get what you get then get it  Day rate for a Photo assistant here in LA and New York is 3-350.00 10 hr dayAtlanta, about $200.00Same job. This isn't a how much to charge question as it is more of a How long it should/would take to do the job.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
