I'm three weeks into my welding class - the last two we've covered MIG.  This is a hobby class, so there are no tests and such.  I spent a few hours this week doing some Oxy/Fuel welding too.  MIG is boring to me, but the Oxy/Fuel was quite fun - lots of things to think about!  Here are some random samples I saved from this week.  Next week is stick welding.All the welds were done on 14 gauge sheet metal - nothing was cleaned prior or after welding.First two photos are a backing weld w/a Lincoln 140 MIG welder - I dont think there is quite enough penetration here - what do you think?Second two are an Oxy/Fuel butt weld - is there enough penetration? Reply:Last two photos for the day - an Oxy/Fuel Lap weld - this was more difficult for me as the overlapping pieces of metal would not heat as consitent as the butt weld.   The technique I was taught was to add filler, then push with the torch, add filler then push with the torch.  Once I get the puddle going it seems a bit easier.  Took me a bit to figure out that I needed to angle the torch at the end of the weld so I didnt burn through.Note - Mods, if these photos are too large please let me know. Reply:Put a tig torch in your hand and you will be in heaven.   Both welds are good, you can see your self about the one with lack of penetration.  Good stuff.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Looking good, iron maiden.just keep an eye on your undercut.you should kinda pick up the pace at the end with the oxy/acet.

Reply:We learned to stick weld this week.  The instructor made us use 7018 rod so we'd learn how to strike an arc.  I played around with a 6011 rod which was much easier to use, but not as smooth of a weld as the 7018.  Anyhow, heres a couple of layers of stringer beads.  I used a Miller Synchrowave 250.
