improper wiring...or is it coincidence?

When reading this, keep in mind that...1. I am a young, 18 year old, failrly  inexperienced welder.2. I was originally brought up in  a wood shop and turned out to like welding and metal working  MUCH more than building cabinets and decks lol.3. I am brand new to this site so go easy on me. enough with that, now to my question.Dad and I  recently purchased a Chinese plasma cutter ( dont worry, we knew what we were getting into.) The machine was ten years old but hardly used at all. One day I Went to use it and the red light came on but no fan and no arc. This happened after only one or two uses. Next, the century 130 mig welder we have owned since 1997 crapped out on us. The gas and power were good, but once again it wouldn't arc. All fuses were good. We took out the main circuit board and found one dark, burned trail. Now knowing that both these units are 10+ years old, im wondering if it is purely coincidental that both units crapped out within 2 months of each other, or if we have a wiring problem in our shop/ we aren't using the machines properly. The mig welder is a 110v and the mi-tech plasma was 220v .any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks! Logan

Reply:The only possible link might be a lightning strike or power surge. I'd guess you'd have other issues like computers or other electronic items if this was the case..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:You can always check the voltage and hertz at your outlet that you plug these into.  You can also check your ground and make sure it is good.  Probably won't find any problem, but always good to check.  I do this at my own place weekly.
