I have to make a new impeller pump and bottom plate. It's a gut pump for a local butcher outfit. Stinks! I found a 1/4" s.s. plate and measured it, nested my parts and started my burn to find that the plate was not square and my burn started running off the edge of the plate. I had to stop the burn and manually burn the rest of the parts.I'll have more pics as things get done. You can see how bad the blades are.. Guess it's from hitting so many bones over time. Reply:You can get into some pretty "stinky" work around things that are used in meat/food processing. You usually really notice it once you start welding on it. I've done chicken processing plant work, and it turned me off KFC forever!
Reply:Here's the jig I made this morning for the impeller. I tacked a piece of threaded rod to the table, put the machined collar down it and tightened it up (putting the plate over it first). I had to use spacers because of the collar off-set. It's kinda hard to tell in the photo's, but before the burn, I put notches on the plate to indicate where the flutes were to be welded. That little step saves me tons of time in for layout and is alot more accurate. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:On many field trips to the Suffern NY rail yard we would have this wonderful aroma of Beef Stake as we approached the Crew building. This one day we decided to find this Stake House and have lunch. Asking the Forman for directions, he asks, You really want to eat there? We all said, Smells good, sure do. He looks at us very strangely, and tells us, its a DOG FOOD PLANT. Bummer, what a let down.
Reply:I managed to weld the impeller and it to the shaft last night. This morning I welded up a crack on the base of the unit. The weld was done with .035 304 s.s. wire and argon with the lincoln power mig set at 450 ipm and 25 volts on mode # 5.
