This was a cart project I did to hold a rectangular water tank.   Tank is not pictured but is about 60" long x 30" wide x 36" high.   The tubing is 1-1/2 x 3 x 3/16.  Castors are 6 x 2.  This was done on the 350P using mig spray and pulsed spray.Tubes ends cleaned and beveled.Frame laid out.Tube joints.Cart, upside down.Waiting to be painted.Welds.Last edited by DesertRider33; 12-05-2009 at 07:10 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:are you going to use it for collecting rain water or what? Looks good.
Reply:man wheres the tractor hitch?that is gonna weigh 2500 pounds
Reply:The tank is used a boat repair shop, they dip the lower end of outboard motors into the tank to run them for testing.  The wheels roll pretty good on flat surface.  Stopping it once it gets going is another story I imagine...MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:That will be so much better than the waterhose method
Reply:Looks like it ought to hold some weightI got to get in the habit of cleaning the metal properly before I weld.  Nothing I do is as shiny as yoursI figure I paid good money for the metal, and rust bein' part of the metal, I ain't grindin' off 20 cents worth of rust.  I'm kidding..........really"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Samm, with stick or fluxcore, everything being so clean isn't so important, but with mig and tig, it makes a difference.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Forgive my Ignorance,...but why not 'bend' the bottom supports for the tank so that they are 1 piece ?  Is it because the metal is too thick ?  Is Heating and then bending them at a 90 degree 'worse' than 'Welding' them as a three piece support ?  Wouldn't a 1 piece (even though it's been heated) still be stronger than a welded joint ?Thanks for the clarification....Cheers,/Jman...Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:Bending was a possibility, but it was faster/easier and more accurate for me to just cut the pieces and weld them.  The welds are plenty strong, went in very hot with spray transfer, plus they're welded on both sides.  Not worried at all about them breaking. As far as which is stronger, bent or welded, I don't really know.  Properly executed, a weld is as strong or stronger than the metals it joins.   I tend to think hot bending would not be as strong.  Someone with metallurgy expertise will have to jump in here and give us all the scientific info about it.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Great cart. But you should put a smoker on it. The grill parked in the back made me think of that! The frame is great but I would have cut square plates and welded them to  the frame to mount the casters. Then bolted the castors to the plates.

Reply:I just thought because you did such a good job putting that thing together, welds look great, fit up is excellent, that just tacking those castors on takes away from the total look. That is all I meant by what I said.  I was not being critical at all.

Reply:DR,On the question of whether to bend or weld the 90° joints...Either works in this application.  I wouldn't hesitate to fab those brackets up using either method. There is a difference in the fatigue 'strength' or durability of those two joints.  Given equal thickness through the corner, either should support the same loads.  But...Fillet welds(not complete joint penetration welds) have a crack built into them.  The crack at the root of the joint is a ready made starting point for a fatigue crack to grow.  A properly made bend will not have this crack, and should survive longer in a situation where there is bending forces applied to the corner. It's worth mentioning that strip that has been cold formed in too tight a radius or not heated enough can form cracks at the outside of the bend radius.  These outside cracks are just as good a place for a fatigue failure to begin.  So when it comes to fatigue resistance, bends or full penetration welds are much better than fillet welds. Reply:Burnandreturn, No worries, I accept criticism as well as compliments.  Thanks for both! J-man and others, thanks for the props!A Dab Will Do, thanks for posting up that info bending versus welding.  Now we know!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
