My friend traded me a pretty nice lincoln that he got several months ago from HD, currently it is setup to run of the 240 outlet, i asked if it can run through the regular 120  if the cords were changed and he said "yes, just move the electodes in the machine to the 120 connecters". i looked around to see if it can be done , i havent found any info on this. am i stuck with a 240 volt only machine or can i dongrade to 120? I just want the versatility in the even i go somewhere that has only 120 volt outlets. thanks
Reply:Your AC-225 requires a 50-amp 240-volt input circuit and is not field-reconnectable to 120 volts. You've got a fine machine to learn with. John
Reply:I believe John is correct. I have two of those and there is no way to change them. It will run 3/32 and 1/8 6011 on a 30 amp circuit, but 1/8th 7018 will trip the breaker almost instantly. I found that out by plugging into the wrong outlet. Been an awful lot of stuff built with those things since they were first introduced. One of mine is ancient, but welds smoother than the new one.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:JR,I had an old AC-225 (1974 vintage) that I bought new for $99.00 at our local farm supply store. I can't imagine how much rod I burned with that thing. I have heard that the newer ones aren't nearly as good as the old ones.Mine would run 1/8" 6011 about as well as any machine i've ever owned. I still had mine up until a few years ago, and it ran as good as new. I think the only repair I ever made was to replace the current selector switch.I got the wild idea to disassemble mine and repaint/restore it. I started the project and got busy on other stuff and never finished it. Finally I just chucked the pieces. I still regret doing that. I should have just given it to a youngster starting out.John
Reply:The old one weighs about twice what the new one does, and does weld better. The new one has an aluminum coil, but with the price of copper and trying to compete I understand why they made the switch. Don't get me wrong, the new one welds good too, but the old one is a bit smoother. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
