I'm very much a novice backyard shadetree home mechanic weldor that has no business welding anything important, but I'd still like to improve my skills.I'm in my first welding class (just trying to be a better novice and get some coaching) and I've been spending most of my time working with 6010 trying to get my technique down.  Once I get a particular exercise (joint type, etc) looking as good as I think I can make it look, I show it to the teacher for sign-off and then go do the other rod types we're supposed to do (6011, 6013, and 7018) and then move on to the next excercise. We're getting virtually no instruction from our instructor, so could you guys at least post up a bunch of examples of what 6010 welds should look like?If the professionals in this forum could post up lots of examples of what it's supposed to look like, it would certainly help all of us for years to come.I'll start off by showing some of my work- probably examples of what NOT to do.   Practicing tie-ins   More tie-in practice  The top one is 6010, the next ones are 6011, 6013, 7018I had never seen (let alone used) 6010 (nor 7018) when I started this class in January.  I've used 6011, 6013 for years but didn't really know what the difference between them was, except that I'd read the boxes before pulling out an electrode- if it was rusty (and I couldn't do much about it) the box said use 6011, otherwise if I could properly clean it I'd use 6013.  That's all I knew.Hobart Stickmate LX AC/DC, Millermatic 252 & 30A spoolgun, Thermal Arc 185 TIG, Miller BWESmith Oxy-AcBridgeport 2J , South Bend 42" 9AHusky 7.5 HP 22.3 CFM 80 gal compressor
Reply:Not to be mean, but... If your instructor is not teaching you, then what's the point of going to the class??  If you've been taking your class since January,  everything  you're asking here should already have been taught to you in the class.  Start asking your teacher questions, ask the him to do a demonstration for you, have him explain how to run each rod, have him look on as you weld so he can see what you're doing and show you how to do it.   It's not rocket science.  If you're in a class, you should be learning in your class and not have to come here asking how.  If he is a teacher and somebody's paying him (probly the school, which comes from your taxes), then he should be teaching you, that is his job!   Make him earn his money!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:You're completely right, and on the surface what you say is exactly as it should be.  Heck, no matter how you look at it what you say is how it should be.However, the reality is that there are twelve of us in his class and we don't get good feedback.  He says he'd be glad to show us but it never happens. However, the class only costs $75 and we students are certain that this doesn't even cover the raw materials.  We get three every week to focus on improving our skills plus the lecture class for another $75 (from a different teacher, who is good about giving us feedback but is teaching a MIG lab when we have our stick lab) and it's a LOT of fun- especially since we have a group of friends all going through it together.  We have the structured assignments and he tells us when he wants us to go back and work on a given one some more before he will sign off on it, but little in the way of actual teaching (more like barely discernable advise).  We feel like he's babysitting us more than teaching but the experience is still worthwhile, even if the "teaching" style leaves a lot to be desired.Hobart Stickmate LX AC/DC, Millermatic 252 & 30A spoolgun, Thermal Arc 185 TIG, Miller BWESmith Oxy-AcBridgeport 2J , South Bend 42" 9AHusky 7.5 HP 22.3 CFM 80 gal compressor
Reply:I feel ya there.  I had a class like that in college years ago.   First week we had a safety lecture, a shop tour and a demo of oxy/fuel welding.  After that the instructor was just there to open the door to the shop and we were free to use whatever machines we wanted for our projects, but there were no lessons, no lecture, no teaching of any kind, unless we asked.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:I got some videos from http://www.weldingvideos.com/ they were worth it. Has 6010/6011 6013, 7018 welding instruction. A local CC uses them for their welding classes. You may want to check this out. Nice welds westcoast.Doug
Reply:Nice welds there westcoast, after running 6010 a little it makes 7018 seem easy for me.My welding classes have around 20 people enrolled sometimes I have to wait a little if I want a demo or a some work graded. The instructor is a great guy though and he is always prepared to answer any questions students might have.
