I just bought a wilton swivel tilt vise at an auction for $10 bucks today, a pretty decent deal I'd say. Its only a 4'', but I spent today stripping the paint and grinding the rust off with a wire wheel and the new Rustoleum copper hammered spray paint is drying as I write this. It looks incredible and I will add a "restored wilton vise" thread tomorrow with lots of pictures. There were no jaws pads on the vise when I bought it, so I need to add them. I looked into prices an they are outrageous for walton replacement parts, even the "cheap" chinese imitation parts aren't so cheap. Also my model is somewhat uncommon so i'm not confident that the 4'' pads available will fit this vise.I'm at the point where I just want to make my own, (it will be a lot cheaper). I want them 3/8'' thick and 1'' wide by 4'' long. Does anyone have any advice for material? I can get aluminum bar or a mild steel bar of my desired dimensions locally at only a couple bucks. All I will need to do is drill and tap the same threading for the hex drive bolts that will hold them in the vise....a pretty simple task. Even though the pads will have a smooth face i think they will still work out just fine, this vise will be my secondary smaller viseIf anyone has made their own let me know anything that you would improve on.
Reply:I have a beautifull old Prentice that I rebuilt. I made mild stell jaws for it and they work very well. They are starting to get impresions in them but they were easy to make and I can always make new ones. I also work a vice hard. I expect it to take some abuse. You could make some aluminum jaw covers for it. they actualy give you a little better grip sometimes.  Mac
Reply:I have made probably 100 or so different sets of jaws for a Kurt Anglock vise.  Jaws are the replaceable part of the vise for a reason.  There's no need at all to buy them from any factory.  The great thing about making your own is you can decide what you want them to be (smooth face, knurled, steel, aluminum, etc.).The trick is to make several pairs at the same time.  It takes about 10 minutes longer to make 5 pairs than to make one pair.  Aluminum jaws are my preferred since they don't mar the steel work.
Reply:Depends on what you want the vise to do.  Non marring aluminum is fine for holding something for light duty but they will slip if you try to use them to hold something while you twist or hammer on the piece. Hardened steel with serrated faces will hold everything but will leave marks on all but the hardest materials. Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:I prefer smooth hard jaws most of the time.  They put fewer marks in soft parts ... even aluminum ... than soft jaws with a couple dings in them.Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
