I didn't want to jump the welder helper thread below but it got me to thinking. I've been stenciled in 1104 multiple qualified in both SMAW and GMAW for 3 years. Lately I have seriously debated going contract with a union. As a matter of fact I already have a dually two SA-200's and all the tools. Since I got my Vantage at work though I've seriouslly considered trading in the SA200's. What are my chances of getting into 798? I have asked a couple of union welders I know and got conflicting opinions but I figure there are some of you guys out there who can give some more information. If nothing else change what I've got so far from 50/50.
Reply:Depends on how much work is in your area. Contact the 798 They are travelers. There is open call for all of the UA locals. Look on the UA website and start a profile there. http://www.ua.org/joinUA.aspIf you pass the tests you will be given a provisional journeyman status. You yourself still would have to find the job though. The union is no guaranty.Last edited by Capozzoli; 01-25-2012 at 10:26 PM.Welding everything, from the crack of dawn to a broken heart.
