I was reading the recent posts about high freq. messing with garage door openers and tv s.  It got me wondering if it will screw up the PCM or ECM in your vehicle if it is near your welding area.  Anybody have experiences?  Would it only affect it if the engine is running. How about the guys with the welder in the truck bed?  Just curious if I should park my vehicles far away when TIG welding in the shop.
Reply:I was always taught to disconnect the battery when welding on vehicles for that reason
Reply:Thanks for the reply.  I was more interested about the high frequency waves affecting near by electronics.  Not the current, like when the vehicle is actually being welded on.  Anybody else have any thoughts?
Reply:i have welded on two of my toyota trucks and have had no problem with the HF.i also disconect the battery.
Reply:I weld in my garage, cars are parked ~ 10 to 15 foot away (just out side the door), and never had a problem. that says alot because my wife's car is Chrysler mini van, the biggest piece of **** I've ever seen (electronic wise). Already had 3 body controllers for the door locks going crazy, and 2 each window moter assy's on each front door due to failure. The norm for me would be, after reading this post, I would say to my self "you jackass you just answered your own question/problem". However, all of these issues were before I got my TIG machine.

Reply:Oh my...the old wives' tale of disconnecting the battery on a vehicle. The only thing it does is......makes one battery cable hang free. This is as good as believing a battery will go dead from sitting on concrete or living near power lines will give you cancer. I've even seen shops disconnect the battery when oxy-acet welding! Ground the machine next to the work area and that's all you need to do.The problem is where you stick the ground clamp on the front bumper and weld the rear axle or such and the current goes through the entire vehicle and travels across different component grounds creating ground loops. If you are that paranoid about failures, disconnect each electronic module before welding. If you disconnect the battery, current can still go through the electronic modules since they are connected. As for RF, EMI or high frequency- don't worry about it. Just don't strike an arc on an airbag, ABS or other module and you'll be just fine.We weld on new vehicles almost daily time and never a problem if you're careful, and the battery is never disconnected.GROUND TO YOUR WORK AREA SOLIDLY....RIGHT NEXT TO THE WORK AREA
