Hi, I'm not really new to the forum, but it's been so long since I last posted anything I had to re-register. I'm 54 years old and live in the fruit state of California. I learned how to weld in high school and used those skills to repair items as I live on five acres in the central valley. Since retirement in 2006 I have been welding small projects and one rather large project, at least for me. This is a great forum and I have learned a lot from you guys. My question is that as I get a little older, my eye sight is not what it used to be. I wear glasses but still find it difficult to see what I'm welding. I have a Jackson helmet with auto shading and have it set at 9 the lightest shade. I am currently mig welding. Are there any tricks to being able to see a little better when welding?
Reply:I know alot of guys who use reading glasses (cheaters) that have the same issue.

Reply:Nomand, I have a Jackson NexGen 3n1 helmet. I don't think it goes lower than shade 9. I may have to go back to a regular cover and use an 8 shade. Thanks for the reply though.
Reply:lol arc weld with 5 shade and you won't have to worry about glasses any more
Reply:I have an optrel helmet, it goes from shade 13 all the way down to shade 5. Great for micro tig work. I've also had a couple of jobs where I had to put up some bright lights around so I could see the whole work piece while welding.

Reply:Brilliant!
Reply:I had the same problem, after cataract surgery things got worse, too much glair. Havent solved the glair problem completely. Try cutting down on the light entering from the open backside of the helmet with a black cloth. 54, you may be starting to develop cataracts. |
