I have spent a lot of hours lurking and learning about how to build a log splitter. Well thanks to the information I have gotten from here, We have success. I no longer have to swing a 16 lb maul to get the wood split. I only posted one pic of the finished product because of my ignorance in not taking a butt load of pictures during the build. Sorry about that but I am happy to say that I have only invested $627 for a log splitter. WOOOO HOOOOO The most expensive items were the hydraulics but anyways, thanks again welding web, this place RULES!!!!!!!!! Oh, and a Bar-B-Q pit is next on the build list. Pulled pork anyone? Reply:Looks like it works so well you split everything down to kindling size: Nice build there. How thick is that plate?
Reply:Nice job on the splitter. Now let me give you a heads up on your Honda 5.0 engine. It has an external fuel pump and is prone to fail due to the ethanol in the fuel. The diaphragm will fail and since it gets it pulse from the crankcase, the leaking fuel will go into the crankcase. So, check your oil before every use and smell it for gasoline. There are two other things to look for, is the level higher than nornal, and is it more like water than oil. Let me know when that pulled pork is ready.
Reply:Do you have video of this in action?

Reply:Thanks for the heads up Trapperjohn on the gas/oil issue. I will be sure to keep an eye on it. The head plate is 1 1/2" thick. It was a bear to cut with my torch. The final response is yes those are drip pans under the tank. I have 2 small leaks coming from somewhere under where I mounted the axle stubs. After this wood season I am going to take it apart and fix those leaks. Thanks for the kind words.
Reply:nice the one i built was of an upside down piece of railroad track and a cylnder i scrounged or bartered for if you are gonna trail it any length i like bigger tires (my opinion) i made mine outa 2wd chevy rims and 15 in tires real easy to find or replace i will see if i can find a pic and post it too bad i had to sell it for cash i havent worked since oct and the guy who bought it says it will crush anything it gets in its waymiller maxstar 150 hobart handler 210 w mig conversion hobart 250 arc force plasma cutter boston ind cutting torch miller performance auto darkening helmet milwalkee 14in chop saw 10,000 watt generator huge drill press and industrial band saw

Reply:Looks nice.Curious as to why you mounted the wedge on the cylinder though? When doing so the wood falls on your feet, instead of out the "front". Typically they do this on Vertical/Horizontal splitters as when it's in vertical position you'll be pushing the wood into the ground, rendering it useless. When it falls out the "front" you can build a table to catch the halves of those big rounds you would usually have to bend over and pick up to run through the splitter again.
Reply:I put the wedge on the cylinder because the pictures that I studied to get my ideas showed it like that. It never even occured to me to think it through a little better until after I welded that big chunk of steel onto the front my buddy told me that I should have put the wedge up front. It seems to work well for now so I may leave it but when I build another one for my parents I am going to switch the wedge and the "push plate" just to see the difference in the two. All in all it was fun to build and I learned an awful lot about hydrauilics too.
Reply:Good looking splitter.
Reply:just an idea.......if you'd ever want to change it to put the wedge on the other side, that backer plate would be an essential piece for that wedge's support. you could simply weld the wedge to that backer, then on the beam on the bottom and weld some flat pieces angled of the wedge to split the wood apart! I've seen pushers on the ram that were pretty simple...you could switch it over quite easily with maybe 2 hours of time invested if you ever wanted to I imagine.just an idea.......Joel |
