Interesting subject..Many of you have air cooled torches..Not too many have watercooled torches..We have seen in the other post what air cooled gas lenzes look like..Here are what the components look like for a watercooled (WP-20) torch..(3/32" and 1/16" shown)Much smaller than air cooled stuff..As you can see I don't use the bigger cup at all..No need..(Yet)So there we have it..Any questions??...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:What would be more useful to some people would be a direct comparison Ampage (sp) between Air cooled and Water cooled heads.I've not used a water cooled torch, but a WP20 looks to be the same size as a WP9.What Ampage would you consider water cooled a necessity, I used over 150amps for extended periods and not found the torch that hot I couldn't hold it. You get more heat from the weld.I guess you can run a smaller head to get into awkward placesLast edited by Shox Dr; 04-16-2008 at 05:51 PM.

Reply:bad enough, when your chair leg cuts the gas off, or someone stands on the hose, and that happened twice to me today
Reply:As i hinted at in the other thread a No9 and No20 torch both use the same fittings (collet bodies, back caps, ceramics etc). It's the same deal with 17, 18 and 26's- all share the same fittingsAmperage ratings obviously vary according to size and cooling method. The ratings are usually applied for DCEN with AC often being lower. Watercooler efficiency makes a big difference No20 is usually rated 250ANo18 350Aand for the aircooledNo9 125ANo17 150ANo26 200AThat covers the common ones, there's a bunch of variations not to mention the various micro torches
Reply:Zap - I'm surprised you can run that much amperage on a WP20.  I have not done it myself, but one of the welders at Panoz that used to do a lot of fairly heavy aluminum welding blew out several hoses on a Synchro 250 - probably 4 in one year.  The cooling system was functioning properly, but he still heated the lead enough in spots to make pinhole leaks.  I guess it was probably more a function of duty cycle an long welds?  I've always been nervous with my Lincoln 300 on the highest range for this reason - expect to get squirted one of these days.My first tig welder was a little Powcon inverter DC only with a WP-9 (same consumables as the WP20).  I used to have to stop welding and let the handle cool so I could hold onto it again!  Other than that I had only used WP20's until starting the teaching job at the local college.  It is a motorsports technician program rather than a welding program, and we have 5 Lincoln Tig's with WP17 air cooled torches.  I have the hardest time getting used to that giant, clunky torch!  But, I have one WP9 tucked away in my office for when we need to do somehting in a tight spot...

Reply:Tubular - you mentioned that your welder blew out the head on heavy aluminum welds.  With aluminum, especially on long welds, the workpiece gets substantially hotter and radiates more heat back to the torch than steel does.  (Ever wonder why we wear those reflective aluminum pads on the back of our hands when welding high power on aluminum.  The radiant heat back off the workpiece is what destroys the hoses more than the heat being generated in the torch.  The water cooling is designed to remove the heat from the torch internals, not from the exterior of the torch.I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Hey kbnit!Glad to see you around..Long time (again) no type..How's life?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Kbnit - I guess I didn't actually say where he blew the hoses.  Usually it was at least a couple of feet back the hose from the torch or more.  Maybe he was finding areas that had kinks or nicks or something...  I just know there are severalboxes of leads with holes in them that he left behind as a legacy...  And, while I've never done it myself, it makes me think about it every time I have my Lincoln Idealarc Tig 300/300 up on the highest range...
Reply:Zap,Good to be back.  Every few months I fall into a black hole.  For the last few months I've been married to an 8-axis robotic cold-wire TIG welder.  Accurate as hell but dumber than a bag of hammers (kind like me).  It takes a lot of programming, but it turns out the sweetest stainless welds I've ever seen in my life.  Other than that, just living the dream, how about you?I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Same'ol Same'ol...Pretty busy at work..I'll have some interesting pics to post next week..I have the beginnings in the camera now but I'm gonna wait a bit untill the project gets going..Glad your back..Now stay here....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
