Does anyone have experience with welding martensitic steels through electroslag welding?Why does ASME Boiler and pressure vessel code limit the use of ESW to ferritic and austenitic steels?(Section VII, PART UW-5 (d))Does this mean that ESW should not be used to weld marthensitic stainless steel?Last edited by AHERNA21; 04-14-2008 at 10:04 AM.Reason: corrected spelling

Reply:I've never done ESW, so take this for what it's worth. check the following reference:www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroslag_weldingThere they mention that the Fed Highway administration banned using ESW on bridges, for concerns over weld imperfections and discontinuities.I would venture a guess and say that ASME prohibits it's use with martensitic steels because these alloys, as a general class, would tend to be brittle and therefore less tolerant of weld discontinuities. I would also suspect that even if the base material were tempered to improve it's initial toughness, the weld HAZ would become very brittle in a martensitic steel. Re-heat treating a pressure vessel to remove this brittleness is probably impractical in most cases.I would also say the little bit I know about pressure vessels suggests that they are designed to yield before undergoing catastrophic failure. If a vessel made of a martensitic steel failed, it would be much more likely to crack or rupture suddenly, with little or no prior warning. I think this would be a very bad trait in any kind of pressure vessel.These are all just general thoughts, if you're serious about investigating ESW for welding martensitic steels, stainless or otherwise, I'd track down an expert in the field and consult with them before proceeding...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
