I am new to TIG but I have put down the MIG to make myself learn tig. I made some brackets today for a project and want your feedback on the welds what am Idoing right and wrong. I think they look pretty good.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas 12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers
Reply:Looks good and smooth - and it looks best on the right hand side. The left and middle have some pretty deep undercut, though. Try to push the filler up there more to fill that undercut in.
Reply:i agree you need more filler by the information given6G zirconium 702 GTAW 2" xxheavy6G P.E.D. carbon steel GTAW 2" xxheavy3G titanium Gr. 2 - Gr. 7 GTAW up to 3/4" 3G 316L stainless GTAW up to 1" 3G carbon steel GTAW up to 1" 3G Hastalloy GTAW up to 3/4"1G tantalum GTAW up to .060"

Reply:Notice at the beginning of your weld how there is no undercut? The shape of the ripples and the undercut tell me that you might be using too much heat. It is ok to use a little extra heat at the beginning of your weld to get things warmed up, but you need to back off a little towards the middle and end of your weld because your base metal is already plenty warm.
Reply:I am learning that you must back off quite a bit beacause the heat follows you and builds during the run. I am starting to learn what I am looking at and what to look for as in heat and filler. Thanks for the hints and info on my welds. I started tiging about 3 weeks ago I have maybe 3 hours on the new tig machine and any info helps as I dont always know what to look for.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas 12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers
Reply:Starts look good..Stops look good..Like WW stated about the heat..Be aware of that and feed the filler from the top and most of the undercut will "go away"..But you are off to a good start.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:ZapYou say feed filler from the top not the typical form but feed from the to of the bead. I guess that would keep more filler up top, That is why I asked I never would have thought of that but it makes sense as you would not have to draw filler up using more heat. Thanks Zap for the grat info.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas 12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers
Reply:Most times when you are doing what you are doing for a beginner you can get the piece situated to where the mating points are like a "v" and just fill the valley..But on pieces that are on a 90 with one part going up.. top feed is the way to go..A little practice and you will get it.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Are the pieces the same thickness? If not that could be some of it to... But I agree with the statement of too much heat...
Reply:Undercut and edged welds and a sloppy entrance or exit of the weld mean a start of a torn bracket. Fatigue will start (if it does) at those points. But that all depends on the stress in the bracket. The overall weld is nice. |
