What is every one using and why is it your preference. This question is for all metels.If I Can't Weld It!-----It Can't Be Welded!
Reply:It really is not a matter of preference when using a shielding gas. The factors the depend on which shielding gas is chosen are as follows:1. process used (MIG, TIG, FCAW,)2. Base metal (steel, stainless, Al)3. Filler metal used (ever manufacturer has specific specs on what gas to use with which filler)4. Desired mode of transfer (spray, globular, etc)

Reply:I'll answer the question.100%argon-- TIG with all metals (which for me is steel, aluminum, and occasionally stainless). I also use argon for MIG with aluminum.75%argon/25%CO2-- short-circuit MIG on steel.85%argon/15%CO2-- same as above.100% CO2-- same as above.98%argon/2%oxygen-- spray-transfer MIG on steel.Oxygen/Acetalyne-- cutting, heating and (rarely) welding and brazing, also occasionally setting stuff on fire by accident.Propane-- low-temp heating, sweating pipes, blowing glass, setting stuff on fire, fueling the gas bar-b-q, powering propane appliances in the camper.Mapp gas-- same as propane, except not in the bbq or camper.Coleman white gas-- in the camp stove.Butane-- filling re-fillable cig lighters and torch lighters.Kerosene-- very rarely, we have a couple kerosene lamps we light up once in a blue moon. Gasoline-- in the car and all 3 trucks, both bikes, the generator, welder, air compressor, chainsaw, starting campfires, cleaning greasy parts, killing spiders.Diesel fuel-- only in the van. human Methane (farts)-- clearing the room and preventing internal explosion.I use natural atmosphere for everything else. Reply:That about sums it up, Desert. Argon: I use for TIG. For me, too spendy to use elsewhereCO2: Wire Feed welding. Does a good job, and is cheap.

Hydrogen -- useful for powering "clean 0 emissions" vehicles by allowing others to produce the emissions necessary to create the hydrogen.Helium -- Useful for some specialized welding applications , filling balloons and blimps and mixed for diving.Nitrogen -- major component of air. Also useful in some circumstances to prevent oxidation and displace oxygen.Nitrous oxide -- Just fun.
