Is there a simply way of telling the difference between chromoly and mild steel? ThanksMillermatic 180AS w/ spoolmate 100Craftsman 110v flux core migGolden Oldy Miller stick welderIn need of a plasma cutter....More tools and junk than i know what to do with!
Reply:no simple ways. Sorry. If you grind it, it should throw sparks that look very from those that come from mild steel; just like cast iron does. But this won't tell you for certain that it is 4130 or any of the other chromoly alloys.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:get a small piece of the material, heat it red hot, and drop it into some water. If you can bend it, it isn't chrome molly. I used to make chisels out of drop off. very tough stuff.MILLER 330 AB/PMILLER GOLD STAR 130KUBOTA BX24CASE MINI HAY PRESSBENCH MILLHYPERTHERM 45BABY HOSSFELD

Reply:Do the spark test, ring test, file test, do you have a rockwell tester?Have a sample cut and polished at a lab, they can tell you from what it looks like under a microscope.Or keep some mouthwash handy for all that taste testing!!
