Hi everyone,  Wondering if anybody has first hand experience using a Fronius 2700 TPS Australian (Alum??) Edition machine on alum??  What I'm looking for is tips-n-tricks with the machine and all it's paramaters.  Thing has heaps of 'em.  We're building a boat outta 5083 plate and 6060(1) extrusions with 5183 filler.  Plate is mostly 4mm, followed by 3mm and there's a bit of 6, 12 and 20 in spots.  We are first time welders and builders and basically learning as we go.  Welds have improved alot in the last couple months.  I think we're at a plateau now and know just enough to recognize our weak spots and strengths with the beads.  Maybe time to play around with the settings more to step it up a bit.  Manual and Fronius website don't offer much help over what the settings are called and very basically do.  We have been shown a little bit by three different welders and realize people have their own 'style' on what's right/wrong/etc....  Any advice greatly appreciated!!  Thanks - J

Reply:That is one sweet unit, and one I'm sure you'll be happy with. I've sold 5 of these over the last couple years, 4 are being used for aluminum, with the 5th unit just purchased by a local community college, that instructor bought the MK Python push pull for aluminum, and a seperate Bernard gun for steel, stainless, and metal core. Are you using this in the Synchro Pulse mode? that mode allows you to dial in your material thickness, then it automatically sets your voltage and wire feed speed, if you prefer to set your own parameters, then just set it to pulse or standard CV mode, then you can adjust wire feed speed, and voltage independently. If your Fronius rep is close by, have him come in and explain all the background screens you can axcess, a few of the parameters you can adjust are as follows:Preflow.Postflow.Pulses Per secondBurnbackHot StartCrater FillJob Master Mode, allows you to set up to 99 jobs all with different parameters, then call up each job as needed. These are just a few, there are many many more you can axcess in the background screens. My favorite thing about this unit is the fact that it has programs for aluminum, stainless, mild steel, metal core, plus it's all self contained so you don't need a seperate push pull feeder. These units aren't cheap, around $6,500-$7,200 depending on options, but if you are serious about aluminum, I'd definitely give this unit a look.
Reply:That's one hell of a boat.
Reply:Holy crap....Thats going to be quite a boat.This isn't your first one I suspect.
Reply:ss427etcetc,  thanks for the reply....gonna call our rep.  We are using the synergetic pulse mode.  Tried messing around with the the other settings and went right back to it.  Sounded radically different and stuck with learning the alum/pulse/syn modes.  We do mostly use the four step alum for welding nearly everything.  Sometimes adjusting the arc length from -6 to +6.  One guy showed us (according to him the way he passes 100% stress testing commercially) how he uses -6 arc length and does little steps with the gun pointing straight down.  I can see why as it pumps tons of wire into the weld and makes the join wide.  Lots of grinding on the backside and lots of heat. Another holds the gun at an angle almost to 60 degrees.....makes a flusher, nearly smoke-free clean weld, but I find more air voids this way.  Think I can even hear the turbulance of the argon making it???  Not sure...weird as the welds come out so clean...little gray and maybe a hint of brown residue.  For now I think, or at least are trying, to err on the high side of things.  So, we're still experimenting...any other suggestions/techniques appreciated...will try it!  this is our first boat, btw....just the wife and I going at it.  All the cutting, fitting, welding, guessing, swearing, etc figuring out as we go along.  If anyone needs tips on not what to do let me know!  It's a 14.4meter sailing cat and you can look at finished ones on the net by searching - catamaran, mozart, chameleon - couple up in thailand I think.  Maybe 12-15 of these things around.  Great design, smart designer and they haul-***.  Otherwise love the Fronius if anyone is thinking about buying one.  The Fronius push-pull has worked flawlessly and the dealer as been outstanding - Queensland Welding Supply in Lytton, Qld, Australia.  Thing ain't cheap, but not too terribly much more then the Chinese made syn/pulse and about double what beat-up standard used larger migs run. Thanks,J
