This is probably a stupid idea or question, but is there any way to run my LN-25 off my Miller 250 mig welder? I'd like to weld aluminum with the LN-25 in the shop and running off the Ranger won't really work. I know a Spoolmatic 30A would be the option of choice, but I'm trying to use what i have with out dishing out another $1000. The Miller 250 is a CV machine and when running the LN-25 off the Ranger 8 you have to turn the dial to CC/CV. Maybe I'm over thinking this also.
Reply:Ask here, they can make you the cable if it's doable.http://www.justarc.com/
Reply:Does the LN-25 have a contactor or control cable?  If not, just use it.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I don't believe so. When i run it off the Ranger 8, the work lead clamps onto the pigtail out of the back of the LN-25, i use the ground off the Ranger 8 to ground to the work, and there is an "arc sensing" wire with an alligator clip on the end that also clips to the workpiece. I just didn't want to hook it up and go at it blind and end up ruining one machine or both.

Reply:Hello jwolf, you should be able to run from either of your machines. If you are running from your Ranger 8 hook the + terminal to the the pigtail on the back of the LN-25, set the machine's output to CV and select your voltage. Then hook up your ground lead and the alligator clip to the ground, set the polarity selector switch on the LN to + load your wire and hook up your argon or argon/helium and go to welding. The only thing different for running off of your Millermatic 250 would be hooking up some sort of pigtail/switch to close the power contactor on the Millermatic. You would also need to address the feed motor on the Millermatic, it would run while the contactor is closed unless you wired in some sort of switch that would cut the power from the drive motor assembly. If you didn't wire in a switch you would probably need to pull the wire out from the feeder unit or flip open the feed roll bale or possibly remove the drive rolls. Good luck and best regards, AllanI should have added: When you consider using your Millermatic to power this set-up you would probably need to attach your + pigtail or cable to the power lug inside of the machine that is a part of the feed roll frame.Last edited by aevald; 02-15-2012 at 02:55 PM.aevald
Reply:I've used the Ln-25 powered off the Ranger 8 many times and it does a great job, I'm just looking to be able to use it in the shop ran off the Millermatic 250. Do i use the Voltage dial on the Millermatic like i would the " fine tune" dial on the Ranger 8? (The one that goes from 1-10). This all just came to me today as i was working in the shop and have had several people ask me about welding aluminum. I know i could always park the truck outside and use the Ranger 8 for power, but its noisy as all get out and going back outside to adjust the machine gets to be a pain.
Reply:Yes jwolf, you would use the voltage dial on your Millermatic to control machine output. As I mentioned though, you would probably want to wire the Millermatic so that the drive motor wouldn't run continously while you were using your LN-25. Your scenario is certainly possible, but not likely something you will run into as a norm. Good luck and regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I would power the LN-25 off the + terminal inside the millermatic. As far as the drive motor, doesn't it only run when the trigger is pulled on the mig gun on the millermatic? I appreciate your help and thoughts aeveld.
Reply:That's true jwolf, but unless you plan on incorporating some sort of control wire from the LN to the Millermatic you would need to provide contactor closure/feed motor run on the Millermatic and that would have the drive motor running constantly on the Millermatic in order for the Millermatic to provide welding current. Hope that makes sense. Regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Jwolf, have you given thought to the particular wire diameter and alloy that you will be using in your LN-25? If you try to use .035 dia. 4043 alloy you will likely run into feeding problems due to the small diameter and soft wire. Now if you are considering using 5356 alloy and 3/64" dia. wire you stand a better chance. Also, whip length could be detrimental or beneficial depending upon length and whether you have a nylon liner or not. A 10' whip length with a nylon liner would probably be the best case scenario and being able to keep it as straight as possible while performing your welding would also provide the least feeding issues. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I don't know anything about the millermatic. The LN-25 uses welding voltage to power the drive motor in the feeder turned on and off by the trigger in the gun attached to the LN-25.Should be hook up the same as the ranger 8 and go weld.As long as the millermatic is ON and has welding output, the LN-25 should work fine. Both my LN-25 have no contactor.  The gun is hot all the time.  I learned to deal with it around 1985.  Its just not a problem for me.Power or welding voltage is set at the welder (miller)  ..........  My lincoln has a selector   "Local" or "Remote".    Local is the choice.Wire speed is set at the LN-25.Simple like me.I have found its easier to hook the little wire out the front of the LN-25 directly to the work clamp or at the welder if its close enough.  All it does is pick up the - polarity to run the drive in the feeder.  On CV its not a voltage sensing feeder, it just feeds the filler wire at the speed you select.davidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Hello David, his Millermatic is the all-in-one roll around type unit that has the integral feeder housed inside of it. It will have welding output when the trigger on the gun is pulled and then it will also have the drive motor engaged and "attempting" to feed wire. If he uses it to power his LN-25 and doesn't want the feeder to be engaged and running he would need to remove the sheetmetal and possibly install a switch that would allow for the contactor to be closed seperately from the drive rolls motor relay. Otherwise, he could simply pull-back the wire from the feeder/gun on the machine and wire the trigger closed on the gun on the Millermatic and have weld output available similar to a conventional power source. He would however, end up with the drive rolls on the Millermatic turning the entire time that he needed output from it and this might push the duty cycle of the drive motor assembly. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Thank you.  I have a Lincoln Wirematic 250.  Similar thing I guess.    It would probably not run my LN-25.  I would just put the aluminum wire in the shop welder. Thanks for clearing me up.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:jwolf, you mentioned the Spoolmatic 30A in your first post so does that mean the MM250 has the 14/10-pin adapter for spoolgun operation? If so, jumpering the 14-pin terminals "A" and "B" will close the weld output contactor without energizing the wire drive motor. If not, connecting an ON/OFF toggle switch to machine harness plug PLG7 terminal #2 or 3 and #7 to accomplish the same thing for use with the LN-25.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:duanes right  they make a module for the machine. you connect plg7 to plg9it goes top right corner of machine in the options box it ll be swith to stop the drive rolls
Reply:I probably am missing something here, What is the point of running a wire feeder off a mig machine, they are both push systems and will suffer the problems associated with aluminum wire and feeding. So why not just load the aluminum in the shop welder, will it not accept the bigger wire?"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
