i broke off the plug prong on my 110 mig gas welder solenoid its  24v dc replaced it with a new miller brand one but it reads 24v ac? it works it has the 2 prongs like the orig its a simple relay solenoid coil switch of course.2 wires? but can it damage my machine? overheat? being my machine is putting dc to an ac solenoid switch?
Reply:Usually AC coils will get hot, when running DC.I don't know if the intermittent use on a welder will overheat it or not.
Reply:^^What he said.DC can be used to power an AC relay but input voltage would have to be reduced to prevent overheating for continuous use.  Voltage reduction can be accomplished with a resistor sized based on the coil current draw.Another possible issue is magnetic "latching" as residual magnetism in the coil core can cause the armature to stick to the core after power is removed.  A thin piece of insulation material can prevent this but in reality, with these issues it's just best to use a DC rated relay for the long haul.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I suppose that you could figure the maximum power dissipation of the coil on AC and put a resistor in series with it,so that the DC power through the coil would be right. You would still have to meet the pull in voltage spec.At least with a resistor you would not be overloading the valve driver circuit,if that matters on the circuit used in the welder. As duaneb55 said best to use the right part for the long haul.
Reply:thanks. i figured it might be taxing straining the circuit.somewhere. the part cost me 20.00 it was still in the miller package unused.i wish i wouldve checked if it was ac or dc.this might be usefull warning for do it urself guys converting flux machines to mig gas. save this post.i learned that grainger might have the coil with the 2 connectors compatable for my oem solenoid.there used also in humidifiers and heat pumps in hvac.24volts DC 8wattsLast edited by carsnguitars; 02-17-2012 at 08:38 AM.
Reply:Yep. I wouldn't use dc on an AC coil. It won't last.HammerFile Big Hammer------------------------------Here, let me Google that for you...
