Can you tig it without removing the aluminzed coating or is it just better to grind it off?
Reply:Grind it off to bare metal till you see sparks from the sanding or grinding wheel, make sure you grind back far enough too. Reply:Grind it off. It will even come off with a good stiff wire wheel.David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:That what i figured but I hate to take gring off the "protection" What do you do to restore the coating just paint it with high heat paint?
Reply:You don't have to grind off the aluminum. It will weld fine. We actually use a sheet of aluminum foil in the joint of some of our 4130 welds, and it increases the quality of the weld.I know, someone's going to ask, so, from the AWS Welding Handbook, Volume 4, 7th Edition, "When aluminized steel is welded by the tungsten arec welding (GTAW) process without filler metal, almost of the the aluminum coating alloys with the steel weld metal and provides adequate deoxidation, even with rimmed or capped steel"Even with the addition of filler metal, the aluminum is alloyed, and provides deoxidation.Caution though, if the aluminum in the weld puddle exceeds 1 percent, the ductility will drop, and formability will be a problem, but given the application that you're describing, I can't see you getting anywhere near 1 percent.I r 2 a perfessional |
