I was cleaning out some of my phone pics and I found this. These are some latchplates I used to do at the shop I worked at. The base of the latch is 1/8" thick. The plate it's welded to is slightly thinner (10 guage maybe?) You can see the oil on the plate. The one on the left was one of the new guys at the time. I'm sure you can imagine how bad the burn through is. The middle one belongs to the boss. He likes to lay the filler in instead of dabbing. The right one is mine. We all used 1/16" filler.New guy, 150 amps. 40-60 parts an hour.Boss, 175 amps. 100-120 parts an hour.Me, 200 amps. 125-145 parts an hour.Just figured it was only fair, if I'm going to critique other peoples welds, I should be willing to put some of mine out there. For reference, the weld across the front is about 2 inches long. Attached Images
Reply:It amazing how different people weld.if i go to a friends house and he is doing a critical weld, he will stop and get me to do it.If he is doing non critical stuff i just tell him to keep going because he need more hood time to get better. ( with a few pointer when needed ) anyways..............I always have a little spurt first on some scrap to check his setup and i will always run hotter than he does ( MIG ).
Reply:Amazing how different the hand to eye coordination is between people and the different settings effect the weld.  New guy  - really cold and fighting the whole process.  Boss - is acceptable without any actual puddle dap as mentioned he starts the puddle and just feeds  Grimm1 - you've got a rhythm which appears to be smooth. Take the time and assist the new guy to benefit not only the shop but the welding industry as a whole.  Keep burning them smoothlyWeldor/ Certified Inspector

Reply:Sorry ZTFab, I don't work with guage material much. Just took a guess. CWI_98, I did try to help the new guy, but the owners of the shop didn't really want him touching the tig welder after this. I worked with him and some of the general laborers on slow days. Thought about charging them all tuition fees . Unfortunately there were to many of those slow days, so lay offs prevented me from teaching them as much as I would have liked .
