Ok folks, I can't stick weld to save my ***, so I'm not going to be participating in this one, but I would like to see what all the rest of you old dogs can do.  Post your best work for criticism and much jeering.  Once this thread has lived for a while, I'll throw all the photos into a thread and make a poll.-Heath
Reply:i think the weld should be vertical only, maybee a weaved cap on a  butt joint. Like a test plate.
Reply:I'll take on the challenge.  I have to practice for my plate test anyway.  I can't get any pictures on here today put tomorrow morning I am going to my parents house, so I'll weld up some vertical plates tomorrow.
Reply:Just say what rod you use, brand, size, and number.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:And everybody has to do it left handed.
Reply:That wouldn't matter, Scott, I am left handed. How about a test plate done in a windstorm, behind your back, with mirrors. while standing on your head? I mean, let's be realistic here.

Reply:Heres the plate that I welded up tonight.  It's 1 inch plate butt welded- vertical up positions using 7018 1/8 rods.  It's supposed to be welded 100% but my root pass didn't work the way I hoped it would.  I am trying to get certified- 2 % or less is fairly tight.  Thanks for looking. Reply:THICK!  I bet that burned up some rod.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:3/8's plate, 1/8 rod 7018.  I just got my first welder 3 weeks ago and never welded before, so far i've burned up about 15 kg of rods.  What do you guys think of my progress?? good for a beginner?? Attached ImagesLast edited by mike39chef; 10-22-2005 at 01:46 AM.
Reply:Looking pretty good.  Your amps look a little high and that might be causing it to undercut a bit (picture is a bit small, so I cant tell for sure), but pretty nice for three weeks.  You dont say WHAT welder you got...When you're having fun, rod burns fast....keep it up...Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:great thanks for the tip, still trying to find the balance between good penetration without undercutting the material.  Ill try lowering it a bit, also first time uploading and i'm not sure how to upload larger pictures. The welder i got is a Lincoln AC 225 GLM, i think they call them buzz boxes.  I'd gladly accept anymore tips if you guys have any.
Reply:I used to have one of these (just not the GLM, what ever that means).  They are a really good starter and make a great backup later on.  "Bullet-proof" is the word that comes to mind for these machines.  Since the adjustment is in discrete jumps, you might want to pick up a couple of boxes of different sized rods.  Little bigger and a little smaller than you currently have.  You can adjust the heat and the fill that way also.  Pick up all the scrap you can find and make some yard-art.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Hello,Here´s some stickwelding that I´ve done a couple of weeks ago.2.5mm sticks, 70Amps, Welded with ESAB Caddy 150A TIG/MMA. Attached Images/Pelleman
Reply:good work everyone
Reply:New to the site, thought a real good test for your stick welding competition should be 6G for everyone, LOL just kidding.  Can I send in a picture of a piece of pipe???  or does it have to be a butt weld with plate??
Reply:GLM is the Lincoln electric 225 amp buzz box made especially for Mexico, or sold in here in Mexico, well that was what my GLM manual said  are you from Mexico Mike?Today it was my first time I hit 7018 with AC. At first when I was welding some scrap it was very difficult to strike an arc, but then I went to my 1x1x.125" square tubing go kart frame and it was much easier. I´ll hit some 7018`s tomorrow vertical, because until now all I got is horizontal.
Reply:Where in Mexico are you? I live in El Paso,TX, just minutes from CD Juarez.
Reply:I´m in Monterrey, Nuevo León  Pásale paisano! jajaja =)
Reply:IM awaay from my welding machien right now or I would.  I tore my leg to shreds with a cutoff wheel that exploded...but some of the pics look good...some, well y'all need to practice.  Though stick aint easy.  At some point it is.  But not in the begining.  I do want to see that 6G pipe though.  But no cheating.  You cant weld it 5 G and then picture it 6G   Anyway, keep posting guys one I get off this peg leg Ill get something going...if I can remember how to weld again lol  jkIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Chris, sorry to hear about your leg.  I hope you heal soon.I'd also like to some pipe welding.  I'd also like to see some fitup photos.  I've never welded pipe, but it fascinates me.-Heath
Reply:Ive done uphill pipe.  I can hold my own on it.  Really aint that bad.  The six G will put you in your place though.  5 G its just a walk in the park.  But once I get healed up I gotta save some more money up...go out to Jking's place, buy an SA 200 off him and get some pointers on downhill pipe.  Yeah that will be awesome.IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:I think a cool skills contest would be 6GR 6in heavy wall coupon heli root and hot pass 7018 fill and cap.Down hand pipe takes some skill. I can't wait too get in more weld time to learn that.

Reply:You guys Great! But you know , the REAL contest , and the most important I might add, should be the root pass . When you guys do the open root take a pic of the backside of the coupon - then we'll see whats what . JohnnyWhy is this called a welding competition when we only see words??
Reply:Yes , so lets get burnin!
Reply:TxRedneck I think a friendly competition would be fun and would also drive me to work harder in class. It looks like you have a few more rodeos under your belt but I'm a pretty decent hand myself. Keep in contact and when you get back on your feet and when I get back into class January 9 2006 we can post some of our work.
Reply:My classes start for my last two classes of my degree jan 17.  I will be using the equip there at school cause its just more convient and my right isnt readily availiable righ tnow anyway.  Using equipment at work for a thing like this...well they wouldnt hear of that...plus its all wire up there except the heliarc.  So thats what ill be doing....this will be fine though give you a lil more time to practice what you got going.  IM sure youll do just fine.  I aint a perfectionist...just gotta pass the WPS IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:what about 4g?
Reply:plate?  thats easy but I can do that tooIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:you want limited thickness or unlimited thickness?  open root?   common lets really geta  challenge going here IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:You want a real challenge I got one. Transparent aluminium pipe 6G. LMAO
Reply:transparent you joker lmao  well wulf you in for the challenge?  you can weld it up whenever you feel satisfied.   post now post later whenever youre ready.  I myself gotta wait.......... poor poor pitiful meIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:hi here is one of mine not my best because the barge was bouncing and bumping on the port.1/4 plate doubler on a thin rusted out stiffener 1/8 7018, btw we 90% use smaw in this part of world "GUAM"
Reply:I am far from an expert on these things so I ask only to understand the different electrodes.  I thought that a 7018 rod should only be used on well cleaned steel (or new).  Just curious why you didn't use a 6011 or other deeper penetrating rod that is better on rusted or dirty steel?
Reply:you are right. on old rusted metal i usually hit it with 6011 first to clean it up and close some gaps then hit it with 7018 it does the job fine.
Reply:That's a pretty nice looking top weld on some very crappy material (hard to see the bottom).  GUAM?!!!  Wow!  Now, I always heard that if you did something really stupid in the military, you either ended up in Point Barrow Alaska or GUAM!...so, what did you do?  C'mon, tell us. Hey! I just looked at some pictures of Guam.  It doesnt look like a place you'ld send folks for punishment.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:to be honest guam is nice and laid back place. alot of military guys likes being stationed here. well for me i was raised in guam, my family moved to guam from the philippines.
Reply:Too much talking and not enough weld pictures.  I wish I had taken some pictures of the pad eyes I welded on the deck of he last ship I sailed on.  It was a 5 or 6 pass weld but was still way easy because it was a flat weld using 3/16" 7018 electrodes.  You can pretty much drag weld them because their flux is so thick.  The welds were almost completely smooth and had a very nice crown height with no undercut.I have been to Saipan, but not Guam.  Saipan was a lot of fun but a mainland folk might get bored with it fairly quickly.  There wasn't much except for hotels and beaches.  They did have a dirtbike track on the north end of the island and that would be a lot of fun.  I'm sure there are a lot of great trails in "the" mountain.  I couldn't get the scooter rental place to rent me a dirtbike after the guys on my ship totaled a bunch of scooters trying to jump them on the side of the road.  I guess we're banned from the PIC, I don't remember why.

Reply:Here's a couple beads that Dad and I ran with Grandpaw's old SAE300 welder the first day it fired up in almost 10 years. These were done on the top of an old piece of I beam. The first one is one I made with 1/8" 6011, next is a couple I made with 3/16" 7010, last ones Dad also made with 3/16" 7010. The rods that we used are at least 30 years old, they've been stored inside Grandpaw's garage since they quit using the welder. The pictures are kinda hard to see, but the welds turned out good though. Reply:here's some more stick welding on a recent ship we did.3/32 7018
Reply:oh  yeah 3/8 doubler plate.
Reply:whats with all the stray arcs?  Dont you get **** for all of that? the welds look good.  what king of ships do you build?  I think ship building would be cool does it pay well?
Reply:Depends on your position.  You'll get more money operating the ships and that job is a little less dangerous.  I haven't been in a drydock yet but everybody I have sailed with that has hates it because it is so hectic and so dangerous.
Reply:the ship isnt drydocked its in the water and kinda rough that day, thats the reason for all those stray arc strikes. we repair alot of tuna fishing vessel, the pay is all right.
Reply:i would post but im not good at taking photos and they are all blurry
Reply:Here's a pipe flange I welded up awhile back. 2" pipe, 1/8" 6010 root and hot pass, 3/32" 7018 cap. http://www.weldingweb.com/attachment...7&d=1143175938http://www.weldingweb.com/attachment...8&d=1143175980RD 1984 Chevrolet C30 welding truck1966 Lincoln SA200 Continental F162 1942 Lincoln SA200 Hercules IXB-51991 Lincoln LN25
