I have been kicking a few ideas around in my head for metal storage of short pieces, anything from 3" up to 6'.  I want to go vertical to save floor space. Does anyone have any pictures of small piece racks or bins that I can get some more ideas from?  If I get a chance I'll draw up my ideas and post it.  Thanks in advance. There is no failure...only feedback
Reply:I keep a lot of that sort of stuff (3'-7') in between the studs in the garage. Shorts between 2'-4' fit under the cross brace where the light switch is. A piece of straping across the face keeps things in place. I also stand stuff up in the corner and tie it up with a strap running to two studs and eye bolts. Small stuff, usually less than 2' usually ends up in buckets. It's a PITA to sort thru, but it keeps it all out of the way..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I've seen people make storage from the space in between studs, there is even companies making bolt in shelves, which I may do in my house storage room.  My shop however has steel sheeting on the walls and ceiling, so there no space there.  The good thing is that is all 6" walls and fully insulated.  I don't really want to do the bucket thing because I have a big PITA right now trying to find stuff, so if I change it, I want to do something that is functional. There is no failure...only feedback
Reply:2 ft. and up stands up in a vertical rack.  Don't like the old one, and am about to build a new one.  Still deciding between storing them leaning (think A-frame, where the steel stands up, and leans on the middle divider), or a box style, where we have a rectangular cart, with sides as well as dividers the steel drops into.  Couldn't tell you the official names for those methods, but my names work, so what gives? For pieces from around 1 ft. to 2 ft, we have a couple of shelves under the horizontal band saw, which they are stacked upon, stuffed in from the end.  You can see the end (shape/size etc), the pull it out to find the length.  Seems to work fine.  Smaller than 1 ft. goes into buckets, or in our case, roll out bins (10 inch by 30 inch. galvanized hardware bins we added casters under, and roll under the the cutoff table).  Too small goes into a few 5 gallon buckets of scrap.  These gets tossed when full, but if in the meantime, something small is needed, we grab it out.  When they're full, they're gone.Who is John Galt?
Reply:I can't seem to throw any good material away.  Maybe thats why I'm having problems finding places for it.There is no failure...only feedback

Reply:Have you thought about PVC pipe standing upright?
Reply:yes a friend of mine has an idea similar, only using metal bands so you can see into it.  I am going to put this on  a pallet so that I can move it around without it being on wheels.  I just got two pallets from work with 1.5" plywood top, and is bolted together with 1/2" bolts running all the way through it.  It will probably end up being a simple "A" frame design with storage for small pieces in the middle, but I am still in the thinking stage. There is no failure...only feedback

Reply:Maybe this will give you some ideas. These heavy cardboard tubes work great. You can find at carpet places or buy cardboard forms for concrete, too. I cut to 10' lengths. By sorting shapes into separate tubes, you can easily pull what you need. The short lengths go in the vertical tubes in the front. The metal frame is made so the tubes lock each other firmly in place. Reply:here is what I came up with if anyone is interested.  I used  1 1/2"  3/16" wall square tubing for the main frame.  I had 100ft or so left from a pile that I bought cheap a couple years ago.  After putting all my metal on it, I decided that it needs one shelf sub-divided for smaller rod, flat and angle pieces. Reply:nice job, great design for being able to see everything that is available.                                                                                    Bob
Reply:Thanks Bob!  So far it's been very handy.  I found a lot of metal that I forgot that I had.  The rack behind the new one was holding all that plus what is still on there.  It will also be taken down and a new one designed soon since I still have no place for full 20ft pieces. There is no failure...only feedback

Reply:I like that stand Aaron!
Reply:all i have room for is to stand longer stuff up against a wall, 10 footers in back and shorter in front, angle on the left channel in t the middle and flat stock on the right, shorter than 2 foot lays on the floor..i'd like to have enough floor space to just throw stuff around so i could walk through it and pick out  what i want..
Reply:I like them all.  The only thing I'd add would be a restrainer piece at the base of the rack to keep the bottom of the pieces from kicking out.It looks like Ed has done that to his."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
