Ok so I'm new to most of this and I have to take a 3/4G plate test in inch thick plate with 1/4 in backing bar. Any good suggestions on rod selection for root. I took the test once and failed using 1/8 in 7018 @ 125 amps. I thought that was kind of standard but someone told me to use 3/32 7018 @ 80 - 90 amps. once I get by the root I should be ok all the tests I've taken before have been open root with 6010 on smaller plate. This kinda threw me for a loop. Thanks
Reply:i did mie with 7018 5/32 at around 138 -141 amps your settings for 1/8 seem fine. run stringers on your test . you can weave but they seem to be sticklers on the stringer beads . and clean your plate thoroughly after each pass.
Reply:The AWS D1.5 Test requires you to only run 5/32" 7018 rod at a minimum of 150 amps. You can only use a hand wire brush, a chipping hammer and a pick to clean between passes. Stringer passes with a weave cover pass. We do pretty much only bridge code welding aka AWS d1.5 daily.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:Not sure I see minimum electrode diameter restrictions or mandatory amperage in the 2010 edition of D1.5. 4.6.3 has some maximum SMAW electrode diameters, and 5/32" is the max for vertical and overhead. This is in the Technique clause, however, and does not seem to directly address performance qualifications. Do you have a code reference forThe AWS D1.5 Test requires you to only run 5/32" 7018 rod at a minimum of 150 amps
Reply:Id like to know why you can't use a grinder on this test when, out in the field, you can use a grinder all day long. 5/32 wire makes sense because you're filling the joint faster. BUT, if you sat there and "picked" the slag out, i could easily weld faster with 3/32 wire and grinder. ? ? ?

Reply:Hi no real welder uses 3/32 rod unless its sheet metal . D1.5 work and lots is FCM needs min heat imput and if its NYSSCM no flux core or mig stick 5/32 to 1/4. 7018 / 7028 / 8018-C3 only. They also prefer all submerged arc welds. John
Reply:Hilo 1/8th rod, 3/32 is wimp rod, takes less skill and more time, I did the 1" plate test vert/overhead with only 1/8th in rod make sure you build up good ramps for your startsUA local 32Team weld-coolTeam miller elite tack upMiller pro-staff

Reply:Depends on the project. Rehab work usually not, new work yep. Most of the time its mag particle tested.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers

Reply:Sorry for a typo, but I'm not going to get in a pissing match on a welding forum, check your attitude at the door, and we all can get along, ps it was probably an auto correct from my phoneLast edited by Fishinsin station; 02-26-2012 at 12:13 PM.UA local 32Team weld-coolTeam miller elite tack upMiller pro-staff

Reply:Why because you can just wash 3/32 the whole test, and stringers take more skill?UA local 32Team weld-coolTeam miller elite tack upMiller pro-staff
Reply:I prefer to only grind BEFORE welding. I was not allowed to use a grinder when I took a 3 G unlimited. Did not need it. I have a small p...... so I prefer 3/32 7018. :}Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:All I know is when I was taking the test, people would have jacked up stringers and would wash a little 3/32 over them to even things out, and continue, most of these people failed the test....instead of wasting my time practicing big washes I focused on stringers... Theres more than one way to skin a cat...Find what works for you, good luck on your test drossLast edited by Fishinsin station; 02-26-2012 at 02:09 PM.UA local 32Team weld-coolTeam miller elite tack upMiller pro-staff
Reply:make sure you can lay a 5/32 wire in your root opening, not just the metal but the entire electrode, This will insure that you dont have long arcing due tonot being able to get the rod into the groove. Im not sure what the procedures are on the test, but if your only allowed a certain RO then use a rod that you can get in there ie 1/8. hope that helps. And to the guy who said if no real welder uses 3/32 unless its sheet metal.... all i got to say is, hot pass a 6g, 2 inch sched 5/8 wall, tig rooted tube with 1/t8 and then tell me tha

Reply:Xtreme Fab, is it x ray or mag particle testing? CUZ, I am sensing a contradiction here . . .
Reply:Ok D1.5 you are given the plates 5/32 only rose bud, temp sticks , chipping hammer, wire brush and the machine is set by the CWI and a set wps to follow . The. v olts and amps are checked with a calibrated meter. During the test you have to maintain preheat and interpass temp. All bridge work is UT,RT & MT tested 100 % .
