Hey guys, I have to weld up four slits cut out of big 3/8thick plate to 1/4 thick tube framing sitting on top of the plate, but i have to weld it over head with a stick welder. What would be the best rod to use, and what technique would work best to weld it up? Any threads that talk about this? Thanks for any help
Reply:It sounds like you are talking about a plug weld or a rosette weld(like a plug but not filled all the way) If I was me, I would go with 7018....
Reply:Roger that on the 7018. Its a good all position wire and should cover any strength requirements needed in that situation...unless otherwise specified. As for technhique In my mind I think of welding overhead almost like welding flat that is I use a very similar technique when welding overhead and flat. A nice heat setting similiar to that you would use for flat...120ish range...should be good.'Mike
Reply:If there are any gaps put the first one in with 6010/6011 to give you something to work on and then go with the 7018. For me overhead is just flat turned upside down, lol. Settings and technique are virtually identical. Don't try to hang a lot of metal on one pass. It'll bite you in the butt. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:No, No, No...It won't bite ya...It will just burn the crap out of ya!!! Jonesy
Reply:I think I would probably start with 6010 and switch to 7018 as has been suggested already. I would recommend wearing a cotton/wool cap under your helmet too. The first time I welded overhead I burned the *&(#! out of my hair. Never again. |
