I live in Mobile, AL. I have been welding for roughly 8 years, mostly pipe welding. I have also been a CWI for the past two years. I am wanting to start a small welding business on my three day weekends and have a few questions. All I have now is one  good stick/tig machine and all my tools. I want to start out real small and just turn all the money back into equipment so I can start doing mig and aluminum. What licenses, certs, insurances do I need or how do I find this out? Also do i have to have welding procedures when its a small business? I always thought that was for the bigger mainstream hustles. I know theres alot of Billy Bobs Welding out there that have no legitimate structure, but i just want to know the bare minimum i need to safely work, till i get some money and business built up so i can start doin all the real insurance and licence stuff. It's just me, and I have no start up money. I work in QC at a plant and get no overtime, and my wife is a stay at home mom for our 3 mo old son. This is the reason I came off the roads and also the reason I need the extra income from starting a small business. I don't "do" lawns, I'm a metal type of guy. So any insight, advice, or assistance whatsoever will be greatly appreciated. If I could just do a couple little odd jobs on the weekends it would make everything worth while. Thanks in advance.
Reply:Check out the craigslist offerings in your area for what you are contemplating. You might offer yourself out as a metal related handyman.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:A good MIG machine would be very helpful. Seems like everything I get with my small (very small) business. A good metal blade chop saw like the 14" Milwaukee is also a great asset to a small shop.

Reply:Thank all of you so much for your input. And the flea market deal is an awesome idea and very do-able. I genuinely appreciate every ones help and any and all responses are welcome. I can see where the world is headed and that is my greatest fear. I've already been hustled by others because I'm too trusting, the last thing I need is some ignorant customer taking me to the cleaners. Making a couple smokers and a firepit or two to run up to the flea market sounds alot better an idea! Thanks again!
Reply:You'll find a lot of small projects that you can take to flea markets here that guys have done in the past. I keep a pict file of ideas I like that I've seen here on the other computer. Wello here has done a lot of these types of projects just to name one that comes to mind off the top of my head.Do a search on coat hooks, wine bottle racks, school projects and so on and you will have tons of reading material to sort thru and look at..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
