cheap tig welder

hey guys,a tig torch, a disposable bottle of gas and i've got myself a cheap tig welder? i dont need industrial strength welds, just sum lil fab work such as pipes, aluminum etc. In general will it weld?thanks

Reply:Actually, I dont think "cheap" and "aluminum" are ever on the same list.You can use any DC power supply, like a stick welder, to do scratch start tig on ferrous metals, or copper alloys.You just need an air cooled scratch start tig torch with a gas valve on the handle, and a tank of argon and a regulator or flowmeter.An aircooled torch like that is about $150, and you can use a mig regulator for the argon or buy a new one. So yeah, you can do some tig welding cheap.Its harder to do scratch start than HF start tig, and depending on what you are doing, you might have a shorter duty cycle when the torch gets too hot to hold, but it will work fine.Aluminum, though, is a whole nother ball game, and about the cheapest way to do that is a spoolgun.Tig welding aluminum means an AC welder, and unless you are really skilled, an HF unit, and probably a water cooled torch.
