Welding Steel with A/C

I have been watching the Muscle Car and Horsepower shows that are on Sunday mornings on SPIKE TV and just about every time they show TIG welding on steel you hear that buzz that you get from A/C welding.  Now when I weld steel using D/C there is no buzz.Are these guys doing something different or do they just not know what they are doing and have a pro welded it after the camera stops?Has anyone else noticed this?Thanks!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:I watch those shows for the same reason I occasionally buy a car guy magazine. . . . to entertain myself catching their errors.    Those guys are mostly hacks. . . . booger welds and Bondo, camera magic, etc.BK
Reply:Haven't seen 'em but could be a couple thingsDC pulsed at high frequencies buzzes, not the same buzz as from AC but heard via TV...More likely that some muppet has left the HF set to continuous or that they're welding with AC when there's no need for it
Reply:They weld with the HF set at continuous, because the TV guys think it should make some noise for the viewers.I r 2 a perfessional

Reply:Ahhh. They play stupidly loud music over news broadcasts, 'jazz up' documentaries and the like with similar (or of course there's the 'docudrama') so it kinda makes sense that someone thinks it'd be necessary here too. Sooner or later some studio muppet will probably come up with the idea of using a spark and/or smoke generator. After all everyone knows welding creates sparks and smoke as well as noise don't they

Reply:those shows definitely hype the "work" up quite a bit.  A friend of mine used to build bikes for discovery channel, the stuff they asked him to do for the cameras is what eventually drove him out of bike building.
