I had one more part of this job to do.  These are 12" channel and a little heavy.  I had to fit 5 of them to a 12 sided pole.  They hold anchor bolts. They drilled the holes in and I fit the pieces.  I made a tool to help, it fits snug in the 2 5/16" inch hole.Vertical up 5/32 8018 Right out of the oven, One thirty something amps.Top of a filletReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:More...Tower is 3/8 Channel is maybe a little thinner.Look close....Slag pealing.....Lincoln welder, Lincoln rod...Captain Slag  Last edited by David R; 08-29-2008 at 06:49 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Backside of one of those wide weaves.  I had a big gap to fill, so I used 1/8" @ 125 amps then made a second pass. I looked inside and saw the slag.  Chipped it off and saw a pretty good bead.Fitup was good on most.Last edited by David R; 08-29-2008 at 07:02 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Nice beads Dave, you takin' the whole weekend off? Originally Posted by David RBackside of one of those wide weaves.  I had a big gap to fill, so I used 1/8" @ 125 amps then made a second pass. I looked inside and saw the slag.  Chipped it off and saw a pretty good bead.
Reply:On the whole job, I burned 30 lbs 1/8" and fifty some of 5/32 including 20 lbs atom arc 5/32 9018.  The cans of atom arc had holes in them so I put them in the rod oven 300*f overnight.  When the rod got down to about 2/3 the slag wouldn't burn off.  Long arc resulted..... Get another rod.  The lincoln rod was a pleasure.  I put the rod oven on the truck.  Fresh warm rod all day.  Tozzi says "like a biscuit right out of the oven".These welds will be tested with sound or radio waves or something.......DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I like that hammer, but it would kill me to use it, lol. Looks like good work. Atomarc is notorious for that stuff David. The last power plant I was on had a terrible weld failure rate on x-ray using Atomarc. I told them at the start we needed Excalibur. Atomarc was cheaper, but after all of the cutouts and repairs it was determined the Excalbur would be cheaper in the long run. Repair rate dropped to almost zero after the change was made. Atomarc is my absolute last electrode of choice and if I have the time I will drive 100 miles to get something other than it.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:8018 is usually used on corten steel. Why would you use it on galvinized?Just asking.Welding very wide cracks makes the weldment subject to cracking from all the stressestrying to pull it together.Hope it works out.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 08-29-2008 at 08:51 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder

Reply:i was wonderin how many wheels you used up grinding off all that heavy galv on the new metal and old..
Reply:I used 3 or 4 4.5" on that part of the job.  I buy wheels for aluminum to grind off the galv, they don't load up.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
