I got inspired by stick man today and fired up my lincoln AC-225 arc welder and burned a few 1/8" 6013  and 7014....I was surprised at how easy it all went down... it's no stick of dimes, but it looks pretty good and I get good penetration...I have been spending so much time figuring out my new miller mig welder... that I have been neglecting  the arc. i taught myself on the arc... and to be honest, I feel so much more comfortable...the mig is nice... when you don't have to chip slag...guess I just need more practice with the mig to become more comfy with it. I do OK with it... but somehow, I love burning rod...I'm a truck driver by day, so the welding thing is just a hobby..I do need to do some sheet metal work on my car this summer (firewall) so the mig will come in handy...  (023 wire)anyway, just venting...happy St. pattys Day. Reply:switch to a 6011 or 7018,6013 and good penetration i don't think go in the same sentance do they? however I did like 6013, i liked 6011 more when we were introduced to them first few weeks of class. but 7018 is still my favorite... just need to work on my verticle uphill....
Reply:Thanks, yeah, when I first got the welder I went down to the local welding store clueless... ( a little more clueless than I am now) and they told me the 6013 was a good rod to start with... practice with... I burned a few boxes but wasn't crazy about it...   I switched to 7014 on my own... don't ask why.. I will try the 7018 is there a chart on this website (or anywhere) that explains the different rod types and what they are best suited for?Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.

Reply:junkyard dog is what I call it. But I use them a lot I do prefer 7014 over 7018 not sure why but I do.
Reply:why do they call it farmers rod?maybe penetration was the wrong word for the 6013...it just went down very easy.. almost cold.. now that I get to thinking about it... but it looks pretty...the 7014 seemed to be better all around.. heck,i sure hope so... I've built some heavy duty stuff over the years with it.. nothing failed yet.. But I'm always one for extra gussets and more weld than I probably need.I look forward to trying the 7018\that seems to be a good all around rod for steel 1/8" or larger.. ?again, anyone know of a worksheet/ breakdown with explainations of what rod is what?thanks.Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:I Know what you mean, I usually weld with 6010 and I have been trying to switch to a LN 25 flux core for when Im building a projects in the yard and it takes forever to get set up, tips foul, and you pay 2.00 a pound more for wire than stick. I have decided that unless I have more than a couple of hours of welding it isnt worth the hassleDo not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Reply:thanks specterwhat the diff between 7018 and 7018ACMiller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:7018AC has additives to the flux that help maintain the arc when changing from DC+ to DC_ and back. It's primary design is for small AC transformer machines that have issues running standard 7018, but it can be run on DC also..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Specialty Welding Rods:7018 welding rod should be used according to the applicable welding codes and engineering specifications. In most general cases if not welding to code, standard 7018 is fine. There are some applications that call for special versions of 7018 and they include:AC - Where DC welding current is not available or situations when magnetized steel may lead to “arc-blow”, 7018 welding rods specifically designed to run on AC are a benefit such as Hobart 18ACPressure Vessel - Pressure Vessel applications will benefit from 7018 welding rod that is coated with a higher molybdenum content to prevent moisture re-absorption and hydrogen cracking. An example of this welding rod is Hobart 7018A1Moisture Resistant - Experienced welders know the importance of keeping their 7018 dry but certain applications, such as high humidity environments, make this chore difficult. In this case, use moisture resistant 7018 welding rod such as Hobart 7018MCCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
