my dad is wanting me to weld some tabs on a big aluminum heat sink so he can bolt it to the oil pan of his bike. is there any specific type of aluminum that most heat sinks are made of? what filler should i use?thanks in advanceMillermatic 211weldpack 3200 squirtgunsquare wave 200victory journeyman kitHypertherm 30xptoo much other crap to listtinkerer extraordinaire

Reply:http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=aluminium+heat+sink+alloy&meta=Off the top of my head, it won't really matter which alloy is used. If you don't know the alloy 4043 would be a good bet but again it won't really matter for thisCan't see bolting a big chunk of Al to the sump making a massive difference to oil temps. What sort of temps is the oil seeing at the moment?
Reply:Just have him run synthetic oil. It will handle any temps the motor will produce. A finned cooler might cool 30*, synthetics will get you another 300* operating range. The moving parts will give up long before the syn.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Reply:Make the heat sink out of 6061. It would just be a waste of money to make it out of anything stronger. As for a welding filler rod I must admit that I'm not an aluminum welder but i think it is the 4xxx filler rod.
Reply:Your Dad would be better served by buying better oil if he's running hot.  Merely adding a heat sink to the oil pan isn't going to make an appreciable difference in oil temps.  If it did, nobody would bother installing those expensive oil coolers on race cars.BK
Reply:im not making the heat sink, its one he aleady had. hes not having any issues with heat or anything. im not sure if synthetic oil can be used on his bike. i know some bikes cannot use it due to it causing clutches to slip. he just has a nice flat spot and would like to add it as and experiment and to make that tiny difference.Millermatic 211weldpack 3200 squirtgunsquare wave 200victory journeyman kitHypertherm 30xptoo much other crap to listtinkerer extraordinaire

Reply:ok, as i said before this is an experiment. this is a water cooled vulcan 2000 with no temperature problems. the idea was to make a little mount to fit this thing as tight to the engine as possible also using heatsink compound inbetween. as far as the syn. oil goes, i was told not to use it in my nighthawk because it would cause the clutches to slip. it will  not harm/alter the engine other than just taking up space. he is not trying to make a huge difference in oil temps. hell, hes not sure it will do anything. the point is to add easily cooled area to a flat surfaceMillermatic 211weldpack 3200 squirtgunsquare wave 200victory journeyman kitHypertherm 30xptoo much other crap to listtinkerer extraordinaire
