I am preparing to weld a custom downpipe for my car. A while back, I saw some inserts - almost like a coupling - but went on the inside of the pipe. This would allow a backing an probably be able to do the weld without back gassing (I hope) Does anyone know where to get something like this? Am I right about the back gassing?Larry

Reply:Are you doing stainless or mild? Mild won't need any back gassing and most people don't usually bother with stainless exhaust but that's where you'll need it for structural welds.
Reply:Remember that if you burn through a stainless backing ring, you've defeated the purpose of having it.Actually, putting a backing ring in there can cause as much of a restriction as not purging the weld. For a downpipe, you would do just as well to not purge, as to put a ring in it. A little "sugar" won't hurt anything. That said, the best option is to purge it. |
