I love fitting and welding.  I have been mostly fitting lately.  I get to weld if there is a back up, but today I get called on to the carpet.  I did all the fitting and was turned loose to weld due to having nothing else to fit.  I get done and have the boss fuming over the project I last fitted.  We go back to the prints and I pull them out to get ready for the Q&A .  My structure isn't square or level.  It looks like a pretzel with BBs all over it.  I wait till the boss finishes his and then I reply, "Boss, I didn't weld it."  I explained I was welding on one of the other platforms getting it finished to go and one of the new welders was working over here.We look at the welder, an Esab 250, and it is turned up on High 7, and the guy is pushing .035 hard wire with c25 gas.  I listened as the boss calls the guy up and asks what he was trying to do.  He told us he was in spray mode and said he was having difficulty getting the settings right due to not having a volt meter or digital wire feed display.  The metal thickness was 1/8 2x2 angle with 6 inch channel that has a web about 3/16s of an inch.  the flanges are somewhat thicker, but not so much you have to change the settings.  He is coming in early tomorrow morning to learn to set a welder up.  First lesson will be you don't try and spray with c25, and you don't spray when the wps designates short arc. Second lesson will be DON'T mess up my fitting by poor heat management!  Third lesson will be read the door panel. His final lesson is be nice to my welder.  They already want to get rid of it cause the QC can't read the "volts" and "wfs" to ensure I am within proper parameters.  I like this weldor so I will be nice.  He is one of the few new kids that really want to work and doesn't think he knows everything just because he had a couple semesters of welding at votech.  I don't know why I just typed all that, I just thought I would share how my day went! Just another day

Reply:That's why I quickly learned to sign off on prints with "fabbed and date with sig"  or "fabbed and welded with sig and date"  I even put a little initial on each piece on a cut sheet rather than a tick.  I have been taken off a saw job to do something else right in the middle.  No matter what is company policy I sign off even if the print is thrown away after.   I make enough of my own mistakes without sharing others:')   It pays to put weld symbols and instruction on everything also.  I hope that young fellow learned.  Sometimes it is smart for supervisors to shadow people for the first six months until they get used to a shop.  I will often remind new guys that they better ask if they see anything or do something that is not working out right.  I would feel better having a Nervous Nellie always asking than someone who charges in and makes a mess.

Reply:If he set heat on scrap first he'd be in better shape. I'm no expert but learned early on to test settings on scrap before welding. They already want to get rid of it cause the QC can't read the "volts" and "wfs" to ensure I am within proper parameters.
