Words, welding, and design by Wayne Smith;"A memorial to remember the loved ones who we lost, and who survived cancer.""The Trees of Life, with its angels and butterflies looking down over the twelve months in the year, keeping the hope alive that cancer can be beaten. We will always remember the loved ones we have lost, we all miss you.""Like the tree of life, the memories still keep on growing, as we all grow closer we have to share the time with others because we all need each other to grow together and be strong."-Wayne Smith Attached ImagesLast edited by jamlit; 03-09-2010 at 06:28 PM.

Reply:This was made by a local welding shop in the town I live in, which is Truro, Nova Scotia. It is set in the down town main street in memory of a lost family member to Cancer. The title was changed at the request of the OP.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:I dont want to sound too mean but that is one of the least attractive sculptures I have ever seen. Why didn't they just plant three actual trees? The color makes the trees look drab and dead. It looks like brown metal primer was the color. The writing is poor, and needs punctuation because it is hard to read. (The letters are fine). The butterflies are cool if the butterflies and the trees changed sizes it would be better. Maybe it looks awesome at night lit up? but still you could put Christmas lights on a real tree.Nice try.Last edited by baggot; 03-09-2010 at 07:41 PM.
Reply:So did the creator of the memorial, Wayne Smith, loss a family member to cancer, or was he just a contractor asked to make this memorial?
Reply:That's pretty cool. I would like to see them a bright color to be noticed more.Millermatic DVIMillermatic 251Older buzz box Cheap 120 welder

Reply:I can sympathise. Lost my grandmother to cancer not long ago. I think a picture of the trees lit up would be nice to see.
Reply:That's cool, I'd like to see the "lite up" pics too. Knowing Wayne put his heart and soul into leaving a lasting memorial to a great cause makes it more special. Decent of you to help him get his work out too. I lost a Grandma and my wife lost her Dad to cancer. Good job guys!If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:Thanks to everyone for the great feedback. I should be able to capture a few luminated night shots of the sculpture tonight on my way home, hopefully I can post them tommorow. Wayne had asked for my help to post some photos on the internet for him, he was thrilled to see some feedback so early, Thanks again! My rod is hot, and it penetrates deep.
Reply:Funny the timing of your post. My Uncle, Larry Fuller, R.I.P., just died a few hours ago after a long battle with cancer. He's in Yarmouth, NS. My parents are flying out tonight for the funeral. Now that I think of it, he would have given me my first exposure to welding. He worked at the local airport when I was little. He welded up go karts for my cousins( his sons). They were very cool and we had a blast on them! Nice memorial sculpture.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:Hey Bert I was writing my opinion. Don't call me a dick. What are you three? If you want to have a post where everyone writes only nice pretty cute compliments, then don't post it here. I came to this site to look at welding projects and from time to time I will leave a comment about them. I went to art school and had sculpture classes where people like you would yell and whine about people not praising everything everyone did. And hey guess what people that sucked still sucked because they never heard anything but "nice" and "great". If you give honest opinions and not feel good ego strokes to people maybe they will improve. Maybe they will stay the same and maybe I'm wrong but either way the only unnecessary post was you calling me a dick.
Reply:even tho i dig the artwork, i definitely agree with baggot.. if ya' suck, ya' suck..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:Your missing the point baggot. It's call the right place at the right time. I say you were being a dick for expressing it in the wrong place at the wrong time. Your opinion of the piece is valid. I stated nothing to the contrary. And I also agree with you when it comes to not feeding someone a lode of crap if you don't like a piece. If I don't like something, I say so if asked my thoughts. But I don't just go piping off about it. There is a time and place for tact, and you missed it. I look at art as you like it or you don't, everything else is just opinion. I just can't abide bad manners.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:hmmmm... he makes a good point too...if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:I see your point. still... name calling? This is not a cancer memorial site. It is a welding project site. I was making a comment on the project alone. The reason for the project was not being commented on.Your best action would have been to ignore my post.
Reply:Gentlemen, out of respect for the cause being promoted here please do not let this thread turn into a pi$$ing match. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.To be fair to the sculpture, it is winter. The aesthetics of even the Vietnam Memorial would be dampened if all the surrounding grass were dead. That is just the nature of outdoor sculptures.
Reply:Hmm. Back to the OP's post. Looks good, something like that takes A LOT of effort and doesn't happen overnight, Was it built onsite, or in a shop and transported?Just another clown trying to be cool

Wayne is actually working on a second sculpture which totals 12 tons, I'm hoping he will let me lay a few beads down, and let me be a part of it.My rod is hot, and it penetrates deep.
