I've been working on this off and on for the past few months. I thought you folks may be interested.
Reply:That is very cool....um, it almost looks like it's going to be a christmas tree stand.
Reply:With the 2 old break rotors built into the bottom I probably could use it as a tree stand....let's see the cat knock this one over. Actually, I have plans to fill the top of the "stump" in and texture it.....after I make make the hundred or so missing feathers.

Reply:Thanks! Rob, to help you with your project I've posted a couple of earlier pics. Here's what it looks like today, done some work in the stump blending in the branch, filled in the top, and built a new root. I'll keep you updated.
Reply:Nice job Swells ! Very nice workWashman
Reply:Hey swells thankx for the updated pics.I guess you have to add a hole lot of feathers on the back. How are going to make the feathers?
Reply:I've been using 1" and 3/4" flat bar. Cut to length, round the end, taper/shape the sides, bend it to the right curve and burn a bunch of wire to mold it onto the wing. It takes me 15-20 minutes per feather. Once I get all the big feathers on, I'll start making the rows of smaller ones to overlap. I have a cardboard template for the outline of the wing that I use to keep the 2 close to the same. I'll probably make a couple hundred feathers by the time it's done. Good thing I enjoy doing it!
Reply:wow. looks like you pulled that out of a mold. very nice.
Reply:Here's the latest pics, up to 13 feathers per wing now
Reply:i hope you dont have a cat, it might hurt itself trying to atack that. lol
Reply:SWells,So how exactly did you make the eagle? You have crazy mad skills!
Reply:I started the outline with 1/4" rod (you can see it in the earlier pics). The rest is filled in with whatever, various size pipe cut in half and beat with a hammer, flat bar, some sheet metal from an old PC. There's a couple of old rotors in the base, some chunks of drilling pipe. I've spent a crazy amount of time grinding, first to shape the piece then to smooth out the weld. What looks like 1 piece is probably at least 1/2 dozen or so with a ton of mig wire to fill it out. The feather are made from 3/4" & 1" flat bar one at a time. This is all self taught, the hardest part is having the patience and determination / stubbornness to finish. Thanks for the positive feedback!
Reply:it just goes to show that you can make something nice out of anything if you have some talent and imagination..thats very coolTheres no such thing as scrap metal, its all good.
Reply:wow, looking great.i went back 5 pages looking for this post and did not find it the other day. glad ya got it back up front. looking forward to seeing the finished pice. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Very nice work! Can never take enough pics tho. More please.
Reply:Here's the updates, added another feather on each side, a piece on the bottom and the sheet metal to close in the back half of the base. For those interested in how I'm building this, I've included a pic of the underside showing all the small pieces that make it up.
Reply:how did u make the eagles head, like the beak and eyes? just curious, it looks awesome the whole thing aye, keep it up, cant wait to see what it looks like when its done aye, well done"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."what are you welding with ?? it almost looks like you are using flux cored wire. the hole thing is SS isent it? summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Yes, I am using a flux core mig. Nope, it's made of mild steel.
Reply:Weazy, the head ( a lot like the body) is made largely from various size pipe. I cut it to length and then cut it in half, hammered, tapered, ground on...what ever it takes to get the shape needed. I'm using a lot of smaller pieces and laying down lotsa bead. The beak started as an outline in 1/4" flat and built up with 2 pieces of 1/2" round rod, mostly it was built up and then ground down.
Reply:Hey its looking good..great job keep it up dude
Reply:He swells have you done any work on the eagle latly?
Reply:Hi Rob, actually I have (just haven't snapped the pics yet). I filled in most of the body and did a bunch of work tapering in the legs. I'll post some pics soon.
Reply:Here's the latest update. I filled in the sides of the body (for you Chevy guys, the sides were made from the lower control arm off an old Camaro). The top of the legs have been tapered to blend in with the body better. I got another 40" of 1" X 1/8" flat bar, time to start making feathers again. Excuse the dust, I just blew in insulation in the ceiling of my garage. Canada eh.
Reply:Its looking good.I will be starting mine very soon.I would like to try to make a model of one first before I dive into it lol.Not sure if I will make it out of stainless or cooper.
Reply:I do a lot of sketching of wildlife.I have a keen eye for what looks right based on dimention and form. With the interest experiance and abilaty to weld and draw I am amazed at your talent to sculpt to exact form. The head is unique and very lifelike. You are a true artist, craftsman and one heck of a good welder.
Reply:Here's the latest on by eagle. Haven't been working on it much lately as a bought an 1987 Vette. Now I'm thinking of finishing the eagle and selling it to get some extra horsepower under my hood. What the heck is this thing worth when finished?

Reply:Here's the latest update, finished the first row of feathers and completed row 2 & 3 on the bottom. Last nite I got the 2nd row started on the top of the wing. I'll get some pics of all the progress up shortly.I got the bright idea to build a metal mouse and hide it behind a root...got that started too.
Reply:that looks great, i hope you get a good price for it. just remember not every one can apreceate hand made quality and will try ti offer based on the cheapo import stuff, dont fall for it put on a reserve so you can keep it till you find the right buyer. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
