I made this Frame for my Bathroom and plan to put a mirror in it.The frame measures 26"w x 32"h x 3"d and is made from 3" Angle Iron.  As it sit's right now it weighs 30lbs and when I'm finished, it will be closer to 40lbs.  I would like to hang it in such a way that it won't show the hangers.  The wall behind has 2"x4" studs every 16 inches.I've never really 'hung' anything like this and am looking for advice. Thanks !  /J... Reply:Z bar. We use it all the time and hang items much heavier than 40 lbs. You'll have to fab a horizontal strap (like 1 1/2" x 3/16") that goes in after glass is inserted. You can rivet the Z bar to the strap. The opposing Z bar can be screwed to existing studs.
Reply:The Z bar sounds just like the suggestion I was going to make.  Do they sell that stuff, or is it all custom made?My name's not Jim....
Reply:French Cleats...
Reply:Very nice looking.  If you don't mind me asking, based on the backside view, that looks like steel, not stainless.  How are you planning on finishing it?--zip
Reply:I weld washers on the back of my mirrors. If it's big, I put two on and string it up with SS down rigger cable and alum. crimps. French cleat is great too.B200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:I remembered this product that I used to use, years ago when I had a Picture Framing Shop.  Amazingly super easy to adjust by applying upward pressure with your thumbs and fingers at the bottom of the frame.  By gently applying the pressure left or right, the teeth click over the support nail, giving you a PERFECTLY straight wall piece.  So simple, yet ingenious !!I don't think these things are 'thick enough' that they can be welded to the frame, but they might make a GREAT template out of 1/8" steel (cut out with the plasma) which would be pretty easy to TIG to my Frame that way...  What do you guys think about that ??Link to Wallbuddies:  http://www.wallbuddies.com/products.html Attached ImagesMiller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....

Reply:The French Cleats will hold most anything the most secure in my opinion.  I use them for all my heavy hanging projects.  For something this heavy use Oak.

Reply:You could weld in a piece of flat bar at the relief angle of the wood cleat on the wall.   ________   |      | \ \           |      |   \ \         |      |__|    |              You can also use shims between one end of the cleat or the other to fix a slight out of level.ReeceLast edited by northazman; 04-03-2010 at 07:36 PM.Reason: Tried to get drawing to line up

Reply:why not drill holes in the angle on the same center as studs and use lag screws, you  can hang the frame then install the glassmember of plumbers and pipefitters local 630 lincoln 130 inverter1965 red face sa 200

Reply:Actually when I posted it I was thinking of wood on the wall , and some beveled steel welded onto the frame... no one said you "have" to make em out of wood...
Reply:this is what ive done on some of my art that is 50 pounds or so.http://www.flickr.com/photos/weldhou...7612470899343/notice the small corner tabs here ive used to place some 1" felt buttons so the steel art does not scratch the sheetrock. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3070/...d321de6297.jpg
Reply:The cleats mounted to the studs will work nicely.  If you take the time to level everything, it will be fine.  I wouldn't use construction adhesive to hang 50+ pounds of steel and glass.  It might work Ok, then again it might not.  Then you have 50+ pounds of steel and broken mirror on the floor.  I'd use some screws or other mechanical fasteners to hold the cleat to the wall studs and the cleat to the frame.  Countersunk screws would be one way, or since you have a welder (    ) you could weld some threaded fasteners to the back of the frame (ala welded studs) and then attach the cleats.  Or weld nuts to the frame and mount the cleats to the frame with countersunk screws from the back and then through the cleats and into the welded nuts.  The welded nuts could have clearance holes in the back of the cleats (counterbores) to fit.More than one way to do it all.  But I would definitely use mechanical fasteners.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:ok  then mount a 2x4 horz. on the wall then drill down thru top angel, then hang mirror on it, i think that would be an easy mount but what do i know i'm a pipefitter not a glass and mirror guy LOLmember of plumbers and pipefitters local 630 lincoln 130 inverter1965 red face sa 200
Reply:I have seen this new stuff called shark skin that is perfect for sealing bare metal that you want to show off swirls or coloring in.
